Be candid? Okay........ I LOVE IT! The blues and greens you use in the X blend well together and allow the 'mexican tiles' to stand out beautifully. Then you've got the secondary lines of the + in the contrasting colour and the blue background fabric which separates nicely from the rest of the design. I'm not very good at explaining what I mean but I'm sure you will understand. I think this block is well thought out and a complete quilt is going to look stunning! Well done!

P.S. I would never have thought of placing the Mexican tiles the way you have. Brilliant!

P.S.S. What size did the block finish at?

Sorry, another edit! The only thing I would maybe change is the position of the Mexican tiles. The top two are brighter than the bottom two so maybe swap the top right with bottom right so that the brighter tiles are opposite each other instead of next to each other? Just a thought?

Thank you! I've been going crazy checking this post for updates!! It's been difficult trying to decide what to do or to even know IF I should proceed and cut out the rest of the quilt pieces. I'm modifying the original pattern by using the 'tiles' so I wanted to try it out first. thank you for your feedback!

To be candid. After looking at the Southwinds pattern your quilt all be completely different since you are not using the light background. I suggest that you make another sample block but substitute the navy blue triangles with a light tan or beige just to see if this will make your beautiful tile fabrics pop. I am afraid that the tile fabric will get caught up in the busyness of the other fabrics. You need some contrast from all the dark fabric.

Thank you I was debating to go either white, ivory, steel gray, or black. Which do you think?

I've been squinting at your block (I know, I must look a little weird) and I like the background you have as it makes the design feel like it has the night sky full of stars as a background. The print is also quite small so I think it would like beautiful once all the blocks are joined together. At the moment, the lower contrast and patterns in the block give it a sort of boho feel, which is what I love. However, if you feel you want more contrast then I would probably go for the steel gray or a slightly lighter gray. Could you do a mock up on your computer to get an overall effect of your background colours?

This is a really interesting application of the Mexican Star pattern. I have made two of the wall hanging size (gave them both away) so I am familiar with the pattern. I like what you have done with your fabrics. I do think I would change the background to light blue or gray and would use a blender rather than a solid. That would make the tile fabrics pop out. I like the rest of your color choices. I think I would proceed carefully with another couple of blocks to see what happens.
