I'm a newbie, and I'm making a lap blanket that I want to be light, I was thinking of just using a layer of muslin for the middle. I saw this on a free pattern... Anyone do this before? What do you all think?

Yes, muslin or flannel works well, just prewash either of them :D:D:D

I would probably use a layer of flannel, but muslin would work also.

I have used cotton blankets (lightweight) and I want to use flannel sometime but I guess it depends on the weight of the muslin, I would not use thin. By all means, always prewash and dry either muslin or flannel.Have fun.

Any fabric that a needle can penetrate can be used as the middle layer, but muslin and other regular fabrics aren't going to give you the same "look" as a batting. Likely they will looked stitched but not quilted, if that makes sense.

I made a quilted jacket using muslin as the batting. This is what the pattern called to use. I regret that I did not trust my own judgement and use a light weight low loft batting. Had very little quilted character to the final project. I would have prefered to use even two layers of flannel instead of the single layer of muslin.

Yes, muslin works great. I live in Texas......we don"t need heavy quilts :-D
