When I first saw your post, I wasn't thinking sewing machine. I thought "My brother bit the dust" was a bit uncaring. The laugh is on me. I had to laugh at myself. Maybe it was because I just came home from a 4 day retreat and I slept from 10 last night until 10 this morning. Sorry about your machine. I hope you can get another soon.

Any sew/vac machine repair shops in your area? They often have machines that were fixed but never picked up for sale, usually reasonably priced.

I'm so sorry! I never thought of it. lol My biological brother is a PITA, but would never wish him to 'bite the dust'. I wonder if I have any binding that needs to be done. I could do that without my machine. Off to look!!

My old machine died with the needle DOWN in my wedding dress as I was making it! Of course I freaked, but luckily a great repair man was able to fix it and save my dress! (Too bad he couldn't do anything about my resulting marriage/divorce! ;) )

Borrow you DMIL's Singer and oil it good everywhere., a drop in the bobbin and see if it doesn't sew much better.

If you describe what the problem is clearly, with a picture, someone on the board might be able to tell you what to do to fix your machine. There are lots of good mechanics on this board that can give suggestions. (I am not sure what you mean by "take up lever")

The upper thread isn't tight anymore. When I remove my fabric from the machine, the stitches just pull right out. I took it in to be serviced. They confirmed this with me and said the bobbin tension is off because the up-take lever is wearing out. I'd be happy to share a picture if it would help.
