Well, I finally got enough purple fabric to start the rag quilt for my stepson (just found out that is what it is called, a rag quilt LOL).... anywho...

I am attempting this with denim and cotton.... did not realize how heavy the denim will be... only got one 4 by 4 block done (using charm sized squares) and it already has weight)
Thank goodness I am not trying to put a batting in it.

any tips on making these kinds of quilts? suggestions, things you have discovered while making them, etc.

(I am not really going for any kind of pattern as I do not have enough of one color to do it, so am working on 4 by 4 squares)
have not reached the snipping the seams stage yet... that will be fun LOL

You will have fun. I prefer larger squares, but it really is just a personal preference.

The only one I have help make was with denim and flannel. Just sewed together and snipped & snipped until I had a blister from the scissors. They do go quickly.

I think the cotton fabrics will ravel more than the denim ones.

I think I would prefer larger squares too, and not denim LOL
Good learning experience, and stepson won't care if seams don't match perfectly.

When I am done with this one, an the other one I will make for other step son, I would like to attempt one of the ones that are quilted with the big x and use just cotton fabrics, no denim (not that denim is not cotton but you know what I mean)

It helps if you have the ...mind is blank...the little scissors that spring back. Have fun!

I made one with cotton, but now I only use flannel/and or denim.

looking at what I have so far, I think the denim will ravel pretty good. (I hope).
I still need more purple fabric, so still on the hunt for purples. Had to add black to it, so as to have enough, but still going to be short on purples.

I will try to take a pic of it tomorrow when I have better lighting, just to show what I have so far. (might end up ripping part of it out as I did not put the squares where I wanted them and it bugs me)

ah I know the ones you mean, I think... is it the little ones people use to snip threads?

mother in law got me a nice pair of scissors that spring back... snipping should not be too bad

Do you find the denim is bulky and stretches away from the other fabrics when sewing it? (should I be pinning the squares?)
only moves a little but that little will add up over a few squares
