Was talking to my insurance agent about getting the new machines covered. It came out that I quilted and he asked me if I hemmed pants. !!! Directed him to the lady that has a sewing / alteration shop in town.

A friend told her husband and children (3 boys) that her sewing machine did not do patching or repair work. They gave her a startled look but never said a word and she has lived by that statement.

My method for darning.....
1 - Hold the torn clothing article 13" above the trash bin
2 - Let go
3 - Say "Oh Darn!"

Like Quiltmouse, I also kept donor jeans ... for years and years and years; this past winter when DH was having open heart surgery and subsequent complications, I cut 8-1/2" squares out of all the denim I'd saved from his, mine, & 3 kids' jeans and made him a lap-sized rag quilt (he gets cold a lot). I had exactly enough squares when I got finished cutting.

Answer to original question: I will do mending (for immediate family) if the garment is worth saving. I will only hem pants if I am allowed to cut off the excess; my son says, "no cutting ... just roll them up and stitch". No way am I doing that. All holey sox go into the trash.

I hate to tell you how long my mending basket has been sitting untouched. I don't like to do it, period! Have a jacket sitting there my DIL gave me to replace a zipper. It's been there maybe 5 months or so. I'm hoping she'll decide it's better to have it done elsewhere. :)

I hate patching!!! I have to patch my sons work clothes once in awhile and he doesn't really care how they look. I refuse to hem my husbands pants, he has to take them out and have them done. I had someone ask me if I would hem his pants since I have a sewing machine. Told him NO, I don't even do my husbands. He was surprized but didn't ask again.

I think that everyone thinks that if you can sew, you can/will sew anything. I get questioned all the time about fixing or hemming stuff. I don't even like to do my own...so no...I don't do that.
