I just used a block called "Grandmother's favorite block" I think it came from the McCall's quilting magazine website. It is one of their stash blocks. It would be really cute doing the center square with cars, trucks, dogs, etc. I loved it and so did my friend that it was for.

Quilterscache.com is a great place to look. (the blocks are rated as to difficulty, too, which helps!)

The first one I made was railroad tracks. It was easy and a good beginning project.

My favorite quilt for a baby boy is called "Bear Hug" by Lisa Christensen, Three Kids Design Studio (904)262-1913. It goes together easily. It has 5 1/2" squares with a 20" x 20" pieced bear with a bow tie in the middle. There is also a "Miss Bear Hug." I couldn't find this pattern by searching on Google. I did find other patterns (choo-choo-) by Linda at River City Quilts.com and her book "Quilts for Kids" on Amazon and e-bay.

A simple nine patch with picture fabrics in some of the blocks is nice. Remember a little baby needs stark contrast in colors, not the pale baby colors. Black and white with bright primary colors included are great to stimulate visual learning in babies.

I made a double Irish Chain using the primary colours and put animals in the white squares. The second one was the same idea except the appliqued stars onto the white squares and then Rocking horses onto the stars. That one remains in my cedar chest...awaiting someone's exciting news that they are expecting. I always keep one a head.

For my first Grandchild, I did a log cabin, one of my all time favorites! I had some Easter fabric with little bunnies all around, so I fussy cut the bunnies for the centers,I used soft neutral baby colors and called it " bunnies in my cabin". Six years later he still uses it.For freinds babies, I've done Pinwheels, snowball, and a 'chain' baby bowtie, all pretty easy in a crib size.

I used the 'Warm Wishes" pattern for my first gbaby. For my second one due in Jan. I'll be using the Disappearing Nine Patch. Both are quick and easy to make.

The panels are all the same as the one in the picture, but I bought yards of it and since each quilt is going to a different baby in a different state (except for the twins), no one will know that I simply mass produced them. And I can get away with it for the twins simply because they are twins. One has a green star for the centers and outer border and the other has yellow and an orangey-brown, so they can tell which one belongs to which child.

I love making easy baby quilts. When my daughter gets pregnant again, I'll have to make 2 for the baby. One to hang on the wall (it's got a LOT of applique) and one to snuggle and drag around. I'm hoping she holds off for at least 3-4 months though, until after my sister's wedding. I'm already making her a wedding quilt, a signature quilt for the guests to sign, and gift bags for the bridesmaids and the ushers. Add to it the 2 challenges I'm in for my local quilt guild and the Baby Jane I'm making with the gals here and I think I've used up any extra time I might have for the next few months. (I'm tired just thinking about it!)
