I bought an IKEA Galant table and an extra top. Then DH cut an opening in the top (with a jigsaw) to fit around my Brother Quattro extension table. We added little legs to the top to hold it up. The best thing about this Galant table is that it is adjustable, so I lowered it so that MY top is now just 29.5 inches from the floor. This is a better height than just placing the machine on a regular table and building a top around the extension table.

Friend of mine sat at a table and her husband used books to help her attain a comfortable height for her sewing table. Then he measured and went shopping. He found 2 base kitchen cabinets and put them together back to back for a cutting table. If you go to the organization section you can get a lot of ideas for virtually little cost. Anyway she had her quilting/sewing room set up right off her utility room. Washer and dryer with a deep sink next to it. They took on the concept of a kitchen with a pantry. Her sewing table has an attached ironing board that can be put out of sight like the cutting boards above drawers in kitchens. He took 2 drawer spaces so it would be long enough and wide enough. He even has a little media centre for her computer and small television. the utility room has a lot of storage for fabrics she doesn't use as much.

Donna I have the same set up. I have a piece of plywood on the cutting side to make more stable and have non-skid shelving so it doesn't move with cutting mat on top. Works for me.

In my sewing room, I have a section of kitchen cabinet. I got it from a showroom for kitchens. It's about 28" wide and about 5 ft. long. Underneath on one side are cabinet doors that open to four pull-out drawers, and on the other side are two drawers (like for silverware) and then a cubby hole beneath. At first I used it as an ironing board to be able to iron big pieces of fabric, but now I use it as a cutting table and a place to set things out.

It was incredibly heavy to move upstairs, but it's very useful, great for storage, and was under $100.

Look on Craigs list and Newspaper classifieds and estate sales. I got an awesome sewing machine table with 2 inserts for sewing machines for only $25. I knew it was a great deal, but not how great until I got it home and looked for similar ones online new. Also desk and tables from estate sales make good cutting tables.

I open up the cabinet and put my Brother sewing machine with it's little table on the wooden shelf.

Don't you love that little Brother machine??? Same one I have and I've found it to be such a workhorse......It was the best I could afford (an even less expensive model) when I started quilting and I upgraded to this one a couple years ago.....sews like a champ and has made some pretty great quilts!!

I have a Gidget table for one machine and a sewing cabinet I bought at Walmart for the Babylock Jane to sit on. They work for me. Good luck planning your new sewing room. Lots of previous postings on here about setting up sewing spaces.
