I am tempted to buy some of the things out now and have bought some. Then I look at the beauties made by my DGM and DM from the twenties, thirty's and on as long as they lived and they had nothing but scissors, needle, thread and sometime cardboard templates. A quilting rack always hung from some room in the house and fabric was scraps from sewing clothes or cut up old clothes during the depression. We are so lucky today.

I don't get intimidated - I get excited! I go to quilt shows with purposes in mind: 1) look at all of the quilts and get inspired by them, 2) watch vendor demonstrations of new products, and 3) buy some fabrics. I always end up buying a new ruler or two (2 a couple of weeks ago) and this time I bought a ruler foot and set of templates for ruler quilting. Can't wait to try it!

Yes, I read up on it but I find that I respond with a much more "reasonable' approach. Many of the new ideas can be handled with tried and true methods. So I review my arsenal of knowledge and "stuff" before I venture into the "OMGthisissocoolIgottahaveit" mode.

For example, the new lighted cutting board. I don't know how long that will hold out with the constant pressure applied when cutting. I'd much rather wait a while and read some reviews. I do NOT need to be the first person to have the new tool.

I still find it intimidating - and overwhelming -
I find it a bit amazing that what I used to do with a pair of scissors, old machine, pencils, needles and threads have become an industry. I do love all the new inventions, but do I buy them? sometimes, mostly not. I think the rotary cutter is one of the best inventions, along with clear acrylic rulers. Makes cutting so much easier. I think next year I'll go to the Ontario (CA) International Quilt Show just to catch up on the new trends. I haven't gone in the last couple of years.
IF I look at the things I've bought vs the things I actually use, I realize many were just "vanity purchases" so I could say I had it.

You will probably get more answers to your question if you post it separately in its own new thread. That way it won't get lost in the replies to the original question.

I think it is amazing how many gadgets there are for quilting, but they don't concern me. Lack of space and funds makes me happy with what I have. In fact, I have too many machines. My weakness is fabric, not fancy machines or rulers. I do like my June Tailor Shape Cut ruler and the circle one with the slots, too. I've got a lot of use out of my 10 degree ruler.
When does one stop being a newbie? Almost 70 years sewing, but only 7 quilting.

Edit; I am looking at the foot and rulers for machine quilting when they become available for slant needle machines.

This should be put in its own thread with an appropriate subject line so that people see it. I'm not familiar with either of these so I can't help on the answer.
