Hi....I have been quilting only since the summer and was wondering if you can tell me how you might quilt this. I did a few dresden plates (Christmas colors) and want to make them into table mats. I can do a meadering stitch around the outside of the blades but how would you quilt the blades as each one is a different color....there are 20 blades...would you keep changing the thread color? I think if I use, say, all red, it would really show too much on the other blades that are not red. Now that I am writing this I am not sure I am making sense...lol. I look at the dresden plates and think quilting it would ruin the look.

Don't see a picture but on my thanksgiving one (still haven't taken a pic of it) I used gold thread on my blades as some of the 20 fabrics had gold in it. I did the machine appliqué stitch around the blades and my two centers

Have you thought about using a varigated thread (Christmas colors)? That would tie all of them together.

I have used invisible thread successfully.

I agree. I use varigated thread to quilt tops of many colors and I really like the look. Invisible thread is too stiff..JMHO

You could also just go with a neutral thread. I don't like invisible thread either. But I think the gold sounds very nice!

I would stitch in the ditch on the blade seams. Just a thought

I usually use a nice neutral...either an cream/tan or a medium to light grey. I have found if you match thread, it will disappear. So if you have some fabrics that match the thread and some that do not, you will see your quilting on some of the fabrics and then it disappears. My solution is to make sure the thread contrast with EVERYTHING, but does not POP. Hope this helps!

It is hard to picture exactly how everything will come together on a quilted project. When you put the red thread on the other fabrics, it will make them blend in with all the red fabrics, making a bridge for your eye.... you have to be brave, because the first few pieces will look starkly contrasted, but when you trust yourself and keep going, the overall effect will tie everything together... and of course, if you decide to do all the blades in gold or or variegated or another color that occurs in most of the prints.... it will be lovely.....have fun...
