I used to think it was my cutting that was off but even with charm packs...so it must be me. If I sew without distraction I do better though.

First of all....don't sew over pins!!!! that can cause a timing problem, broken needles, nightmares of all kinds........and slow down, we are not here to win any races....we are here to "unwind" and relax.............. (sewing, that is). To help with sewing straight - I have laid down a strip of doeskin(Walgreen's) to the right of where the edge of that illusive 1/4" should be...this strip goes as far down on the deck as your personal machine will let you go without interfering with any bobbin cases or whatever....seems to help too........oh, but once in a while that little "crooked genie" shows up and then I have to frog stitch........(rip-rip-rip)

I've tried these devices and the problem I have is that every time I have to change the bobbin I have to lift the tape, metallic credit card, pack of post-its or whatever, and then reset it and check my seam allowance again. I use my 1/4" foot and the line at the front of the throat plate which causes the fabric to go through very straight, so I am not having to eyeball the needle area every second. I do not use the stop-and-start button, just the foot pedal. I try to remember to keep the machine running in needle-down position so if I stop to straighten a seam or whatever I don't pull the fabric out of position. I also don't sew too slow as I am twitchy and tend to 'oversteer' the fabric.

I hope someday to have a better feel for the material and the machine. Onward and upward!

I sew straight enough for me. Sometimes I notice a part that is not so straight and I will correct it, as the seam will not iron out right.

I can't sew straight all the time, but if when I press it, it looks good then it goes. But sometimes I have to rip...guess I always will.

A very experienced quilter once told me that sewing a really straight seam was one of the most difficult things to do in quilting! That said, I use one of those feet with the little "rudder" on the side for 1/4 in. seams and it helps. Going slow and steady also helps, as does angling the fabric slightly to the right as it starts feeding (someone mentioned how the feed dogs tend to pull to the left). These things help but I still have to watch very carefully as I'm sewing and always have the trusty ripper handy.

I'll keep the "post it" suggestion in mind now too since sometimes the fabric shimmies under the little rudder on the 1/4 in. foot.

I really liked the comment from the person who said that her seams are straight but her rulers are "off"!
