#1 - the creativity of combining colours and scraps, matching the "points" ... or not ....to give a different "look" to the finished product. I particularly like having someone tell me that I'm breaking the "rules"....

Gosh. I really dont know? I have always sewn. I saw a quilt tutorial and it looked easy, like i could handle it. Thats been, hummm maybe 13 years ago?
I really like the camaraderie that quilters all seem to have. Helpful, friendly, nice.
I am not particularly fast or good but i love my sewing machines and i enjoy the quiet when i am home.
I love fabric. Thats really about all i can say??

I quilt for my own pleasure. I like everything about it. I like playing in fabrics, I like cutting, sewing the pieces together, pressing the seams, and especially the quilting part. That is the part I am least good at but I enjoy it the most. Most of my quilts are here with me, and one day they will get donated. Except for the ones we use. I wouldn't donate a used quilt. I have made a lot of baby quilts, and some for friends who are "quilt worthy", and for the grands. Lately a friend and I are collaborating on quilts for foster kids. She was gifted a great deal of fabric, so we are using that. Some I make from start to finish, some she makes the tops, gives me the top and backing, I supply the batting and quilt them. It is all enjoyable to me.

For me it is the creativity that goes with this relaxing and artistic life style. For me it is not a hobby or a job but pure pleasure.

I've noticed that I seem to know very few casual quilters. They all seem obsessed, like me!!

I don't think of myself as a particularly creative person, and so when I took a quilting class, I was amazed at what I could create using strip piecing. It took off from there. So many pretty fabrics and thread, interesting tools, and sewing machines. I sometimes take a hiatus from quilting (might be a year or more), but it always calls me back. If I have been out of my sewing room for a time, when I return I return obsessed (and wondering how I could stay out of my room for so long!). I FMQ my quilts on my domestic machine, and sometimes that bogs me down a bit. I have been practicing my FMQing a lot, because I am determined that I can do something other than stippling (I have added some meandering paisleys and such, as well as the wavy line quilting I did on my last quilt). I usually don't start multiple projects at once, but I think if I did - then when I need a break from one particular facet of the process, I can work on something different for awhile (so I don't start avoiding my sewing room). I find something as simple as laying down a straight and even 1/4" seam relaxing. The sound of the machine, the feel of the fabric in my hands. I love seeing it all come together.

Just thought of another reason I enjoy quilting.....When you make a quilt, it is the only one in the world made exactly the way you did it. Its like snowflakes...no 2 are exactly alike.

There's always a new challenge, something new to learn, yet the result is often practical and useful. It's just plain fun!
