Can I have a polyester batting in between unwashed pieced 100% cotton top and bottom? A friend and I are in the process of piecing the top for a quilt.

Also, which batting is best for warmer climates, polyester or 100% cotton? The recipient's moving to North Carolina. It's warmer there than here in NY.

Well for the first question, I don't see why not. I never wash batting, but do wash fabric. But have made quilts with unwashed fabric. I don't usually use poly batting though.
Next question: Cotton. It's cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It amazes me that the same quilt is just right for the summer nights in Florida and also for the winter ones.

I don't think that you'll have a problem with poly batting, but 100% cotton "breathes" while poly doesn't.

since polyester does not 'breath' it tends to be a warmer batting. cotton breaths- so is great for warm weather quilts- wool is another good choice- the quilt we have on our bed in the summer has a wool batting-may seem strange but it is wonderfully lightweight, lofty, breaths - is warm in the winter & cool in the summer. when someone complains they do not like quilts because they are not warm- I make them one that is warm...I use warm fabrics (like flannels, wools, corduroy's, denim and I use either a wool or a polyester batt...I also remind people that back in the days when women were making quilts to keep their families warm they layered bed linens...a wool or cotton blanket {or what ever they had) and a quilt or 2- their quilts were made with homespuns, cottons, wools, again- what ever they had ...

There are some really nice lightweight poly batts that work well with the cotton fabrics. My DD and SIL live in GA and they have a number of quilts they love with the poly batt. If they need something warmer, they just put another quilt on the bed.

I've used both high loft and low loft poly batting in quilts with both washed and unwashed cotton fabric. All worked well. Since most homes have climate control I don't think it matters that much as to how heavy the quilt is. Mostly it's a matter of personal preference.

I like 80/20 blend and it is pretty warm here.

Hey guys, NC is not necessarily warm! I was just there in the Raleigh area this past weekend for Brother's b'day and we were comfortable in long-sleeved tshirts on Sunday on the patio at noon. On Saturday night we wanted a sweater after 9pm outside!

They also get snow during the winter. The west side of NC is mountainous so cool/cold as well. They like "regular" quilts just like the rest of us!
