the truth first: i reorganize about 3 times a year. within a few days it looks again as though a bomb went off.

so, for approximately two days, three times a year, my fabs are sorted into see-through plastic drawers by color, darkest on bottom. fat quarters are in a separate drawer when possible, but above or below the yardage in that color group.

holiday, baby prints and kiddie prints are separate but also grouped by color.

once i've selected a collection of fabs for a specific project they go into their own drawer, along with the pattern i plan to use.

My sewing room has plastic bins stackable bins tht pull out like drawers. I have three stacks of them floor to ceiling, probably two dozen total. A bin for each project/kit that has is ready to go--I think of them like airplanes in a landing pattern. A couple bins for misc batting scraps--black, cotton, poly. A bin for binding...I cut and iron the binding for a quilt before I send it to the LA that way I dont use the fabric by mistake. Each WIP has a bin. UFO's on the other hand are put all together in a BIG plastic tote that is pushed under a bed.

Those are all neat but in the bins with just fabric in them by color--my "stash", the material is just wadded and stuck in there.

For those of you who sort BY COLOR...do you include seasonal and holiday and kids fabrics and batiks in with the BY COLOR sorting? Do you keep it separated?
My fabrics (cottons) are sorted by color, but batiks and novelty fabrics have their own places. I don't do much with novelty, so I have only the four stacks of it. Batiks I do even less with, so it fits into a plastic bin.

I do the same thing with my fabric except...
I fold as I iron my fabric after washing.
I use a piece of cardboard 11 1/2" wide x 22". This pulls out really slick, ready to do the next one.
This allows me to count folds so I know how much I have.
I stack mine lengthwise on 5-shelf bookcases from Walmart.
