I like this idea, pebbles w/ black thread in the multicolored background, and a few concentric circles in the black background of those squares.

Maybe best of both worlds? I changed out the very bright centre spot for one with the main batik fabric, to pull the whole thing together more. Thoughts?

Thanks for the many nice comments. This isn't my original design, this block is something I saw in one of Libby Lehman's quilts and thought I'd try. I put it on point and then I liked the shape without the side triangles, so I just left them off.

I've been asked a couple of times for instructions, so I'll just put them here...To do it, you need a circle attachment for your machine. Layer your main fabric square, your under fabric square and a stabilizer and then stitch 3 circles about 2" apart or however much background fabric you want to show. (Start at the inner circle and work your way out to avoid puckers.) Take your block off the machine and cut the main fabric away from the outer ring and the inner circle, as close to the stitches as possible. (Careful not to cut your under fabric.) Place the block back on the circle attachment EXACTLY in the hole it was in before and use your decorative stitches to finish the edges. I used embroidery thread.
For the plain black ones, I just used the same sizes of circles and did decorative stitches.
I marked the sizes on my circle attachment with nail polish so I could be sure to make them all the same size.
Hope that makes sense!
