Jane,

Here's the conclusion I've come to about pre-washing. In addition to the other comments here. If I want to see some visible shrinkage on the quilt - if I want it to look like it's been around a while (that antique look) - I don't pre-wash. Then when it is washed it shrinks some around the threads and looks older. However, that is not my favorite look. I like mine to look new longer - so I pre-wash everything. JMHO
