I have both the 12" long and the 6" long and love them for paper piecing.

I have both the 6" and 12" add a quarter inch rulers and use them all the time, especially for paper piecing! In fact, I find the 12" ruler more versatile and think the one you have will likely work fine. If you have the phone # for the class instructor or coordinator for the class contact them and ask if they will be available for purchase. When Carol Doak presented her technique at our Quilt Guild, she had all the supplies available for purchase for those of us who didn't have them (like me!). I find that for p.p. it is a godsend.

I use mine from Fons and Porter. But, you should always use the same one for each project. They can vary, I learned the hard way. I don't use mine for paper piecing. I like to hand piece my stuff and use this for marking. Good luck.

the add a 1/4 is for paper piecing, there is also an add 1/8 for mini paper piecing. these come in 6 & 12" and have a small lip that fits over the edge of your paper piece. there is a 1/4" ruler that is a 1/4" square for adding a 1/4" to anything you are making. If you are making court house steps, it seems any ruler could be used just add a 1/4 to your measurements.

I have an add a quarter in all three sizes (6", 12" and 18"). While you 'could' use a regular ruler, the add a quarters have a special lip on them, which could be crucial to keep your paper-piecing from slipping when making your trims. I would recommend getting the 12". It isn't that expensive and could save you some pain! :)
