I made a king size (approximately 112" square) for my youngest daughter's bed. It is an enormous Star of Bethlehem in bright batiks on black; the border is a double row of geese. Expensive to make; really expensive to have LA quilted but a lovely quilt. I told my daughter not to expect any more quilts until she gets a smaller bed!

Big in the literal sense? Insanely expensive? Very complicated? Or perhaps a combination of all three? Interpret the question however you like.

Mine was a K size applique with 48 different tulip designs. I researched historical societies, books and old folios from the 1930s depression era when the CCC projects sent women artists to Applachia to document quilt designs. It was a real learning experience.

It took me three years to applique and hand quilt. I can look at individual blocks now 30 years later and remember where I was and what I was doing. I gave it to my son and DIL

I just finished quilting a king 96x117 inches.

I made a queen sized quilt for my daughter when she graduated high school. It has 196 squares. I printed a lot of pictures from her high school years onto most of the squares. The rest of the squares I left blank for her friends to sign and decorate. I hand quilted it. It was very expensive but well worth. She loves it and took it to college with her. I'll have to take a picture of it and post it on here.

The biggest and most expensive was a quilt for my daughter when she got married 11 years ago. It was queen size with just plain blocks but every other block had pictures on them. I started from the outside and used pictures of when they were babies and ended up with their engagement picture in the middle. It cost about $600.00, which I guess isn't much compared to what I have heard here but it was a lot of money plus the wedding. I also did one for a friend who's husband died and it ran even more because the picture squares were much higher that time. Both people loved them though so the cost was a mute point.

King size Teip around the woeld... took me forever to hand quilt it !!!!!!! But it was beautiful...

I made a king size 112 X 120 and designed the pattern myself. We are moving from southern heat to cooler mountains and could not find a pattern with bears, moose, deer, etc so came up with my own idea. I machine quilted it with the meandering method at our local quilt shop where they rent time on the machine based on the size of the quilt. Good thing I didn't go bigger, it maxed out the frame!

This one is easy, Rob's Mariner's compass that I posted pictures of a few months ago. Got the center done and then didn't know what to do next so rolled it up and put it away, thinking I would get an idea. Didn't happen for a few years. But thank God it is done and out of my house!!!!! Jan

My second project ever was a "Storm at Sea" queen quilt using Fairy Frost fabric. It took 2-1/2 yrs.. No paper piecing -- all hand cut and sewed together individualy. For a newbie it was a challenge and since one of the fabrics was a new color it tended to be expensive. Long before I finished I decided on the backing and the new color fabric was discontinued -- less than a year after I started -- don't know for sure but I think it was because of a problem with producing the fabric. I found there were problems with mine early on.

Anyway, it has come out really great -- most points and corners were great. I was able to find enough of the discontinued backing I chose that was okay without problems. It was expensive and very trying and time consuming but a very great lesson. It was a learning opportunity for me. I've come to love intricate smaller patterns. I love challenges.

Well, when I first started to do quilts I thought quilts were only for beds (this was pre-computer/internet - basically prehistoric times) so I started with the log cabin pattern and made Christmas presents - 1 king, 1 queen and 2 twin sized quilts. Took a very long hiatus from quilting after this. I've recently made another king and queen and am just in the thinking stages of trying some smaller projects as I see how beautiful your table runners, mug rugs and wall hanging are here on the board.

King size with a turn over for the pillows.

luvTooQuilt 11-15-2010 04:47 PM

My biggest 96x120.. Was for a wedding present but after I rsvp'd Hubby , me and my 5 yr old - My niece to be and nephew told me no children allowed so we returned our airline tickets, used the refunded $$ and bought a camper trailer for next summer camping travels and I kept the quilt.. Looks beautiful on my bed..

createquilt 11-15-2010 05:10 PM

A king size, and a double king size 120x120. About $190. It was a little difficult to quilt on machine and by hand. Just hard to handle. The person the double king was made for had a queen size made 3 years ago by me. She loves them both. I am now in the process of making 2 more king size quilts for her and 2 queen size. I guess i'll be busy for awhile and eventually and hopefully experienced in making larger quilts.

When my daughter got engaged we decided to make quilts for her bridesmaids. Here's the problem - only 10 months until the wedding and seven! bridemaids. So, I made seven twin size quilts using variations of "friendship star".

Its a Double Sawtooth Star in mostly woven plaids and shirting prints, it will be for my son,Steve. He said he wanted a manly quilt. I think it qualifies. :-D

Mine is a 90" square quilt I have made, entirely as a surprise, for my hubby for our 10th wedding anniversary which is in less than 4 weeks. I'm still quilting it, but on schedule to be finished by DDay!! I hope to have the quilting done by next weekend, so I can take a week and a half to finish the borders and then the rest of the time to get the binding on.

It has it's own thread. It's the biggest physically. It's also the most expensive. It's the first time I've used 108" backing and it's flannel. All other good cottons. I couldn't get bamboo batting like I wanted in that size, but it's warm and natural, so add that cost.

It's also the most time consuming. I make one big project each year and this one has taken the whole year. I made a few blocks each month, the top this summer, it was basted in July, but I seriously cut my quilting finger, so I couldn't get started on it until August. I've been quilting it 3 months straight and it will be 4 months when it's all said and done.

Here is the link to it. Keep in mind that Hubby has been in the house when every cut and stitch was made, in the house and helped me press it and get it ready to take to the church to baste. He was with me when I bought the quilting frame and has been sitting in his easy chair when I've been on the couch every night quilting it. He still has NO CLUE that it's for him. I put blocks in it like Ball and Chain and Contrary Wife. I've rattled all the blocks off for company because they all know it's for him and he is still absolutely CLUELESS!!! I love it!

Scroll through the thread for the blocks, but the final top pics are on page 3.

Mine would be the king size one that I just finished the top. Technically it is my most expensive since it is what finally made me decide to buy a long arm machine. The queens that I quilted were enough of a struggle in a regular machine I wasn't going to attampt a king. And since I have become a quilting addict I figured I might as well take the plunge. I am supposed to get my machine tomorrow!

It was a quilt made for my mom by me using my grandmother's linen as part of the quilt. I call it the 3-generation quilt. It is made from a gazillion circles that are sewn into squares. It's pretty but heavy and provided quite the challenge.

hilda Vest 11-15-2010 05:42 PM

My very first one! I chose the Ohio Star which has 21 pieces in each block and made a quilt with 20 blocks all by hand!!! While I was working on it, a friend very innocently asked me,"Why did you choose a block with so many pieces?"
As a beginner, I hadn't thought of the number of pieces. It took a long, long time, but I did finish it.Whew! I get tired just thinking about it.

quilterfly 11-15-2010 06:39 PM

My biggest, scariest challenge as a quiltmaker was a king size quilt commissioned by a gentleman who wanted me to use his 18 pairs of Wrangler jeans, a navy sportcoat, a tan Carhart barn coat & a red corduroy shirt (all well worn) as the focus of his quilt. It was so heavy his wife & I together couldn't lift it into her car. When I asked her later if they were using it she said they had to take it off the bed because they couldn't move when they were under it.

lovequilting2 11-15-2010 07:06 PM

I am doing the Civil War Tribute BOM, this has to be my most expensive and challenging. You have to sew a seam 1/2 way then when the block is nearly finished, you have to go back and finish that seam last. Oh, it can be very confusing!!!

I'm currently hand quilting a 110 x 110 quilt--i quilt on my lap so I can only work on it during the winter months. this will be my second winter and I hope to finish it this year. will post pics when finished

Debbie V 11-15-2010 07:39 PM

Biggest was a wedding gift of a queen size. Took a long time to do the top with all the pieces, but I did it on the machine. Too big for me to quilt so I had someone else do it.
With my grandmother gone, I'm trying to keep up the wedding gift quilt. Have another in the works now -- they want frogs.

deranged_damsel 11-15-2010 08:22 PM

I have hand quilted 5 king sized quilts! my first three I did all at the same time, nine patch scrappy, one for each of the men in my family, my female family helped with the quilting.
my fourth was a "star" quilt, made for MY wedding. full of 60degree angles that I drew with a pencil and protactor, then cut with scissors! I hand quilted this by myself on a large scroll type frame, I stitched every sun sign and planetary symbol in to it!!!
my latest was last year, another wedding quilt. I was on bed rest and quilted the entire thing on a 12" qsnap frame!

!!! I cant wait to do more !!!

Becky13 11-15-2010 08:32 PM

Probably the sampler quilt I made for our double bed. It's our Winter Quilt with log cabins across the top, flying geese on the drop on each side and backed with lavendar flannel. I really love it! However, we now have a queen bed so it's too small. waaa!

Becky13 11-15-2010 08:34 PM

That's extremely impressive! haha - your name "deranged damsel" is fitting.

Becky13 11-15-2010 08:37 PM

hahahaa. Oh wow, you had a great summer of camping!

I have done two both king size that were both challenging -all hand appliqued.

Dee 11-15-2010 09:35 PM

A queen size quilt and 3 large pillows and 3 med. size and a bolester and heart pillow.

slk350 11-15-2010 09:59 PM

2 really come to mind. A queen size 72 block sampler quilt that I machine pieced, but hand quilted for a raffle at my son's school. Some blocks took me 3-4 hours each. Then, a very large wall hanging for my friends 40th birthday. A variety of blocks, 4 of houses she lived in, her 3 boys hand outlines, some that I had friends write something on, birthday cake, tea cup, tea pot and in the center of it all, a replica of her and her husband dressed as bride and groom. Some machine pieced, some hand sewn and all hand quilted. It was worth all of the work, when she cried her eyes out when she got it.

Halo 11-15-2010 10:15 PM

Mine was an extra King size 60th Anniversary quilt for my folks. It was 6" yellow & blue star blocks with a photo, of their 60 years together, in every block. Even had all their grand kids & great grand kids all around the border. It ended up with something like 97 photos on it. Not only the size, but also the cost. It also had blocks that people, that came to their open house, got to sign the quilt.

My largest project was a king sized quilt that reached 3/4 the way to the floor, and it was a pillow top king, and I did it on my domestic sewing machine in three sections. It turned out great.

I think I spent about $350 to make a Cal King quilt for my daughter and her husband, I let them pick the fabric out at our local shop, well the one closest to home, only 45 minutes away, it was about $12.00 a yard, by the time I added shams, and a storage bag for it, I am very glad to have made it for them
