Keep in mind that the type of batting you use affects how wide to cut your binding strips. A thinner batting will benefit from a narrow cut on the binding because less of the binding is taken up by turn-of-the-cloth.

...... agree ..... and they will also knock a quilt down if the binding has a lot more on the back than on the front. It should be almost equal.

With that in mind, I have done some bindings at only 2", if I am only wanting to sew at 1/4".
Some quilts you have to keep to that strictly. Eg. star points right to the edge, or if the quilt is all squares, you dont want the squares to be out of proportion from the rest of the quilt, etc.

Binding widths can pretty much be whatever you want!!!
.... sometimes I make a really wide binding, starting with 5" or 6" of fabric before folding and attaching. It puts a nice frame around the quilt.

I had bought it at Hobby Lobby off a big roll. It's something almost like warm and natural. Darn I forget the name.

I really appreciate all your responses. I've had put bindings on a couple of quilts before but you know that thing that comes around sometimes "Brain Fog" well its been visiting me lately. Lol
The quilt is for my cousins son ishouldve had this done and sent but things can cause detours.

I like wide bindings so I cut mine between 3 and 3 1/4", depending on how much fabric I have available. I sew between 3/8 and 1/2 inch.

The batting in most quilts is Quilters Dream Poly-Mid Loft. I am probably stitching a fat 1/4 " also as the needle is a few clicks over the 1/4". My regular 1/4 " is probably shy. Sounds like we use fairly similar techniques.

I use 2.25 and almost always use W&N batting.

2.25" for cotton batting, but 2.5 for polyester or high loft. I also leave an excess 1/8" of batting/ backing beyond the top whenever possible to keep binding full. I machine front & hand sew back. Just keep a small bit prepared binding pinned to your design wall or bulletin board near your machine. I do that with a sample of " majic binding", because l can never remember my cut measures for that,lol.

I use a die cutter to make 2.5" strips and sew with a generous 1/4" to the back, then fold to the front and machine stitch down, sometimes I do a wide prefolded satin binding, that one I like to do with a wide zig-zag stitch.
