[QUOTE=QuiltnNan;8045571]i use 2.25 and my bindings are always full. i was chatting with a local judge the other day and a perfectly lovely quilt did not win a prize because the binding was partially 'empty'[/

I like 2 1/4 inch binding too. I lost points from a judge because my binding wasn't full. I cut 2 1/4 inch binding and then after I sew it on the front of the quilt, I trim away the extra batting and backing fabric but I leave about 1/8 in beyond the edge of the quilt top to make sure my binding if full. I hand stitch the binding to the back of the quilt. It is a good 'TV' time activity.

Well, don't laugh. I am self taught and only cut mine 1 1/2 inches. Most of my quilts are gently used, and I've never felt the need for double binding.

I use 2 1/2" because I have a GO and have the 2 1/2" strip.

I used to cut 2.5 but I ended up with some space and didn't care for that so I started cutting at 2.25 and it seems to work better for me.

I've only done binding with bought bias binding but I would like to do my own. I have a 2 1/2 inch strip cutter so how do you go from these strips to binding? Do I need to fold the edges in and iron or is there an easier way?

Fold in half and stitch raw edge to quilt. Depending on you if you want to hand or machine stitch it to the other side. There are several schools of thought on pressing the crease or not. I press the crease in. There are plenty of tutorials and you tube videos on how to do this if you decide

I cut my binding at 2 3/4 with 3/8" seam.

width od binding strips depends on the look i want for the binding on finished quilt. i machine stitch to front using 1/4" seam & hand stitch to back using hidden stitch. i will sometimes fill areas where batt is thin with small scraps of batt. gives even fullness all around.
and i sew down miters with hidden stitch front & back.
and i don't enter into shows ..i was just taught that finish should be as best i can do it.
and i have severe arthritis in both hands and wrists and fingers ..and carple tunnel for many years. but i have loved sewing since early childhood & it will take a lot to make me stop.

I use 2 1/4" binding with a 1/4" seam, if it is to thin when folded over use a small sliver of batting to stuff, I make small slivers of batting for this purpose.

I'm the odd one out here. I cut mine 3 1/2". I keep it entirely filled with batting and love the look. The wider binding does take a little more care with the mitered corners, however. I take a half inch seam.
