By they way, I'm using the same block pattern, Army Star, for my 12 blocks, but the fabric may be a little different for each block. I'm using my blue stash also. I know I don't have enough of any particular fabric to turn out all 12. No problem with that, eh?

Thanks for the recipe Deb...and I hope there is no problem with using stash blues (different ones) on the blocks...that is my plan also

You are more than welcome, Sandpat. Hope you enjoy them.

Thanks for that Marcia. I am in the same boat. My only Fall ritual is to go for a vacation week to the mountains!

LOL

Hows everyone else getting on with their stars? Am I the only one having trouble getting matching points? I'm unstitching the worse of the mismatches, but how perfect do they need to be?

Butterflyspain 10-12-2008 12:56 AM

Sazu, have no fear, I am right along with you. Have made two different stars so far, one ended up 11" and thought if I put a border on that would spoil the effect so started on another, couldnīt get the point to match, third one......almost finished the first star so plodding is all I can say.

I am sure by the time we get to the 11th star we will think what was all the fuss about.....hopefully LOL

I would think they need to be as perfect as you would want if they were all going into your own quilt...don't know about you, but I like for mine to match  Mind you, I haven't started on mine yet..I positive that I'll be having the exact same problems!!

Im not sure where you are having problems.. you might post a picture of your problem child and we give you some pointers.

If you are having trouble with the size,, ie the directions say you should have a 12 inch block and you are ending up with an 11 inch block, check your seam allowance. When piecing using traditional techniques, sew with a "scant" 1/4 inch seam. This means slightly less than 1/4 inch.

To test your seam allowance, cut (2) 2 inch squares and sew them together with 1/4 inch seam..press and remeasure.. The result should be exactly 3 1/2 inches... If not adjust.. Once you find the sweet spot, use it for your piecing..

If you are having trouble with points matching, you might try pinning..using the pin, line up the points, then pin ahead of the seams. Remember that your sewing machine tends to pull the bottom layer though the machine fasdter than the top, so pinning might help

I THINK I have decided on which star to make! These are not the fabrics I will be using but they will be close to these, I had to order so I havent got them yet. What do you think about this star?

Butterflyspain 10-12-2008 10:56 AM

That is really nice. I like the number of fabrics in this one. My star only as the one fabric, but each block will be a different fabric.

Looks really good.

purplemem 10-12-2008 11:05 AM

This is really pretty. I have all my fabrics now, but I haven't decided on a star.

You Go Girl! What a great star!

Calico92402 10-12-2008 11:09 AM

Wow - very nice! I haven't even decided on fabric or a pattern ... I keep watching this site for inspiration.

mgshaw 10-12-2008 11:20 AM

I am still not 100% on this star, might try a couple more then decide. Heck might even do two sets, since I cant make up my mind!!!

sandpat 10-12-2008 03:59 PM

I like that star. I haven't started looking yet, but I will soon. I just got EQ..so I'll check out that block library

judee0624 10-12-2008 05:24 PM

Hey Judy,

I have picked out my star block and have the fabrics, but I need clarification. Are all the blocks supposed to be identical? I see some are asking about using different fabrics in different blocks. What is the verdict?

Thanks,
judee

jstitch 10-12-2008 05:57 PM

Im not quibbling about the rules on this exchange.. if you want to use different fabric in each block, by all means do so..

Just make sure they are 12 1/2 inches unfinished, blue and white, and a star block..

thanks for asking

Judy

:D Thanks for answering. Sure makes it easier.

Grandma Cindy 10-27-2008 08:59 AM

mgshaw, did you decide to make all the stars the same colors or will you be switching them up? Cindy

I will make them all the same. Here are the fabrics I got. I only need 4 blues, The medium blue is for sure but I dont know if I want to use the 2 darker and 1 light or use 1 of the darker and use both lights.

purplemem 10-27-2008 11:01 AM

These fabrics are beautiful! I can't wait to see the blue/white stars cuz I've always wanted a blue/white quilt. This is soooooo cool!

Calico92402 10-27-2008 11:31 AM

Mgshaw, those two darker colors could surely find a good home at my place! Love them.

Butterflyspain 10-27-2008 12:13 PM

These are lovely colours, I like them all.

I was playing today with blues at the quilt shop and then got an early call form a handy man and had to leave sooner than I expected. So the saga goes on...Also while there I got a call from son in San Antonio, he will be having some shoulder surgery the first of December, so it looks like I will be doing the Thanksgiving thing this year instead of Christmas. His wife is a school teacher and will be at a conference in calif., so they need me to drive the grands to school, etc... I was going to wait until going to the Carol Doak seminar in March to see them all but God has different plans, night for now and thanks for the reading eyes.....

sandpat 10-28-2008 05:14 AM

Well, Grandma...life sometimes throws us a curve ball...I think just to see what we do with it   You enjoy being with those grands and hope your son recoups quickly.

Grandma Cindy 11-03-2008 07:37 PM

does it matter which is the primary color and/or the background color? I understand blue and white, but does it matter whether the star is white or blue?
