Ok, this is what I have, some of them were gifts. I got to make the owl next!
Mother, grandmothes, aunts, etc. all had many pincushions. I don't know where I went wrong - must have been something lacking in my upbringing LOL. I've always kept pins in a cute little tin of some kind, and later in the plastic cases they came in. I have several machines and there's always a container of pins within easy reach.
Pincushions, huh??? something to think about.... |
I have 2 regular size pincushions, which I was forever losing. So, I decided to make one that would be impossible to lose. I found a print in my stash of spools of thread and threaded needles, cut it into six 7" squares, and made a big block-shaped pincushion that is impossible to lose sight of! I put a small bag of gravel in the bottom to give it stability, and filled it with polyester. I love it. It holds lots and lots of pins, and I never misplace it!
Really cute ! Thanks for sharing!
OMgosh. I thought I had a lot on my shelves but yours are absolutely awesome. Now I don't feel so bad about collecting them and joing any pin cushion swaps I find. Thanks for sharing. A little green here. LOL
I have quite afew pincushions, but could use more. The owl is adorable. I have at least 2 per room, but still never have one where I need it. I'll have to make another. What do most of you use for the inside??
very cute...
Adorable!!
Luv the owl, I'm going to add him to my collection! Thanks.
Nice collection, very creative. I love the made in occupied japan one with the men holding the cushion, but the most practical one has to be the large one in the back.
I collect the old ones, love the wear that they show over the years. I also collect the old sewing kits.

Recently, two of the guilds I attend had pincushion exchanges. I think everyone should have a basketful of pincushions in their sewing room. Man, there are some adorable pincushions out there! And now my personal stash of pincushions has grown since I took the photo...they keep multiplying...
Show me your pincushions! What's your favorite? I have been looking at the thrift stores, for "bottoms" for pin cushions and have come up with a lot of cute, cheap, things to use.........now, when am I gonna have time to actually make them.......I bought a box of steel wool scrubby things, to put in them (somebody on here said to do that, to make the pins sharp)..has anyone seem the cute "sewing machine" one that is at Tuesday Morning...... I wanted one, but thought it was a bit expensive for my tight budget.

I have a herd of elephant pincushions (13) I like pincushions too! I think it is a neat collectible!
all of them are really nice!! I have patterns but never attempted one...guess I better get busy huh?
I love the owl, Is that a pattern you can tell me where to get it? Thanks
Love the pincushions but only have one that I stick needles in. I have a few magnetic bowls and things to keep them contained to the sewing table but if I knock them off I have another magnetic stick that sweeps them all up. After getting a needle under my kneecap years ago (yes it's possible and yes it takes painful surgery to remove it) I am very careful about keeping my floor clean. I hate carpet in the sewing room but that's what I have so make the best of it.
How adorable. think I need to start a pin cushion collection.
They are all very nice but i like the owl best good job
Absolutely adorable. I need to start making pincushions.
So many ideas...so little done. |
I only have one...the ugly tomatoe (I have had it since I was in girlscouts, too many years ago...care to share..LOL
You can never have too many pincushions! I keep most of mine on a top shelf. I use a triple decker my friend gave me; love it!

I love the little owl. I have a small collection of pincushions and scissor fobs. Thanks for the tute.
I certainly don't have that many. I found some old antique shallow dishes at a thrift store and made 5 different ones. I found a sugar bowl that was missing a lid and made one for my best friend. I use a little glue in the bottoms to keep them in place. My favorite is a square crystal dish 4 inches square(1 1/2"high). I keep different pins in each, along with a one in my bedroom, close to the ironing board which stays up all the time. Made several which I gave to the Senior Center craft show. Don't know anyone that couldn't use a pin cushion. Love your cushions.
I love all the collections ( Just what I need :) - to start another collection [LOL]), but these photos are appealing, especially the little owl.
Thanks for the tute. |
very cute owl! thx for sharing!

Wow - you have quite a wonderful collection. How long have you been collecting? I love the little owl and the teapot amazes me. Gotta try that one! My SIL collects them too. She is a retired Home Economics teacher and she also bakes fancy cakes, so for her BD I made her a little cake on a pedestal pincushion that she loves. My DH and i found the glass pedestal at an antique barn. I sewed a cylinder in white satin, filled it with saw dust, and embellished it with ribbonwork, then attached it to the pedestal. A fun project!
