i bought a jute rug with rubbing backing to go under my sewing area just for these type reasons. though i do not have carpet, i had a really thick room sized wool rug that pins would get lost in or bits of thread & fabric would get trapped in. so in comes the jute rug (purchased at pier 1 or marshall's) and i can get everything up as there is no pile for small things to get lost and it's easy to clean.
when i am on the floor on my knees pin basting my quilts, i use the foam garderner's knee pads to shield and pad my knees from the hard floor or pins my sewing buddy (cat) has managed to bat around. it works great. see my sewing buddy.

Love the pincushions but only have one that I stick needles in. I have a few magnetic bowls and things to keep them contained to the sewing table but if I knock them off I have another magnetic stick that sweeps them all up. After getting a needle under my kneecap years ago (yes it's possible and yes it takes painful surgery to remove it) I am very careful about keeping my floor clean. I hate carpet in the sewing room but that's what I have so make the best of it.

Absolutely adorable, I love pincushions too, but most of mine are very utilty oriented except for my self designed sew-dahs, and of course the plucky chickens.:)

LOVE the owl, thanks for sharing! Also thanks for the tip of using a basket, I think I can find one of those:)
|
I just love your pin cushion collection. I don't think you could ever have to many. Do you display yours so you can always see them? I think it would be so cute to just have a cabinet full of them.

I just made several pincushions that are Dress Form Pin Cushions. They are so cute as you can dress them up lots of different ways

This is made with a porcelain paint tray for the base. Circles of fabric are gathered into little balls & stuffed, then hot-glued into the wells.

I love your owl pin cushions and keep mine in the top shelf of an old trunk. If I have pins in them the cats pull them all out with there mouth and drop them everwhere so I dont use them.I love them and like to look at them and give them to my friends now and then. handquilter

i only have one ft i feel urge to collect some more. wow yours are great thanks for sharing

I've never even owned a pincushion! Never had a use for them. I use old Altoid or Brighton tin cans for my pins. I love the Brighton tins. They're so pretty!
|
anyone know a tutorial for the owl pincushion?? Since when I need one I can't find one there is NO limit on pin cushions!!
|
Great idea for quickie gifts. I'd make mine a sachet with a little baby powder or lavender oil, so I could toss 'em in any drawer when not in use. A few drops of clove oil would make the whole house smell like Thanksgiving or Christmas.
|
very cute, my friend loves to make these type of pincushions.
|
I make a lot of pincushions, I have an order for lots of them, so that's what I am working on now. I love the owl one.

for my owls (smaller ones & large one) i used the pattern from moda bake shop. to get the pattern to print smaller i just scaled it to an 8.5"x11" page. the original size of the pattern is the larger one.
http://www.modabakeshop.com/2010/03/...companion.html there is another owl pattern for really small owls at link below. just click through the pages to get the full tutorial. http://moonstitches.typepad.com/phot...ial/index.html have fun making your owls.

Oh, gosh, ladies, so many cute pincushions. I had just bought a pattern to make a cat pincushion for gifts, but I am also going to make several owl pincushions. Incredibly cute.

You have quite a nice collection of pin cushions. I'm just starting a collection & looking at your pics has given me inspiration for a couple that I want to make.
|
Each is nicer than the other. Great jobs.

Answer NO...never have enough and if you have tons they never are in the right spot at the right time...
|
Just read an article on pinchusion filling using silica gel crystals for drying flowers. States it sharpens and prevents rust. Fons & Porter 2009.
As soon as I have time I will take a picture of my small collection. I have been trying to make a new one each year, this is only the third year. |
My answer would be NO! I don't think that you can have enough. I don't have very many and I think that I need some more.
|
do you think if I make a pin cushion for my daughters they will start to quilt?
That owl pin cushion is something my daughter would love! |
i just wonder how safe that silica gel would be in a pincushion. i believe it is harmful if swallowed and i am always holding a pin or needle between my lips for brief moments of time. i know i dont want anything in my pincusions that are not human digestable. plus i wonder if silica gel can come in contact with the skin. and once your pins have been sitting in silica gel, what happens if you prick your finger? does that chemical have a chance to enter your body? just my inquiring mind.
for me, if my pins rust i would just purchase some more as they are not that expensive.

just saw this post, love the pincushions, I am on a pincushion making binge, love making the little things (and sometimes big things)
edited to add, I made the little owl awhile back. mine is quite small but would be easy to resize. |
I love pincushions! I don't know how to make any. I have some friends who give me some as gifts. But I would love to have a huge collection.
