Can't Believe the Price of Aurifil Thread!

While packing for my quilting retreat, I noticed i didn't have any good white thread left, so I ran to my LQS. I could not believe that the Aurifil Thread had gone up to $12.00 a spool. I know I didn't pay that much a few months ago when I purchased some other colors there. I bought my one spool, but then just purchased three spools of Aurifil for under $29.00 with free shipping at http://www.discountembroiderysupply.com. With taxes, that is a savings of around $2.50 a spool. I hate doing that to our LQS.

Annie68 07-21-2012 06:25 AM

Thanks for that site.

Quiltngolfer 07-21-2012 06:33 AM

I always hate to do that too, but I still support the LQS by buying fabric, kits, and patterns. I just have to save where I can since retiring.

CookieZenmilk 07-21-2012 06:43 AM

i purchase all my thread from http://tinyurl.com/ceokz45 connecting threads. you can't beat the price and it is excellent thread.

Nanamoms 07-21-2012 06:44 AM

Since I don't have a LQS, I have to buy the "good stuff" on line and I love Discount Embroidery Supply. I buy a lot of things there and usually it's the best price I can find.

Skittl1321 07-21-2012 07:45 AM

I had to get aurifil for a class and was shcked. So expensive.

I piece with connevting threads essential and quilt with isacord. The isacord i get from imachinegrou, ahipping is pricey but if you order like 10 the per spool price is still great.

Dolphyngyrl 07-21-2012 07:58 AM

Its why I still use gutterman with 50% off coupons at joanns. Never used aurifil and won't ever be paying that price for it either when there are other threads out there that are nice that are way cheaper

pinkberrykay 07-21-2012 08:07 AM

My LQS charges $10.00 for a spool, for me its well worth it. I have used a few other brands and my machine and I love Aurifil. For me its well worth the cost.

katier825 07-21-2012 08:11 AM

You can still get a lot of colors of Aurifil from Sue's Sew EZ Designs for $6 spool. Service is very quick!

Nanaquilts44 07-21-2012 09:19 AM

My LQS sells it for $10.99 and I hope that price isn't going up. I love Aurifil.

ckcowl 07-21-2012 09:24 AM

it's great to have the *power of the internet* so we are able to shop around- there are many places selling aurafil for much less-
fabric.com has a pretty good selection & since shipping is free at the $35 level i generally take advantage and stock up.
unless i have to have a certain thread right at that moment i seldom purchase thread at the lqs- i spend alot of money there for other things though

BellaBoo 07-21-2012 09:44 AM

I buy Aurifil thread here: With shipping it's still cheaper then any other place. Great service too!http://www.tristan.bc.ca/cart/produc...&cat=36&page=3

Check out the door crashers and grab bags.

BellaBoo 07-21-2012 02:23 PM

I went to a quilt shop about two hours away today for Christmas in July sale and came home and ordered a grab bag of Aurifil thread from Tristans! It was $12 a spool at the quilt shop and the collections were $120 and up. I have also used the Cucirini cotton Mako sold there and can't tell any difference from Aurifil except it cost a little more. It is suppose to be better then Aurifil. I buy the huge cone of the 60wt 2 ply for bobbins.

Quiltmaniac2010 07-21-2012 02:50 PM

Has anyone else tried the thread from ThreadArt? I buy their large cones of polyester embroidery thread for my longarm. It has a lovely sheen and is very strong. $4.99 for a large 5000 M. cone and a kazillion colours. Can't beat that!

Nanaquilts44 07-21-2012 03:09 PM

Good sites to know about. Thanks.

franc36 07-21-2012 06:06 PM

I love Aurifil! I'll pay whatever it costs; but I usually shop around and get a good price. I really stocked up when a LQS went out of business.

I love the price at Connecting Threads, but my sewing machine doesn't always agree. My machine loves Aurifil and when my machine is happy, I'm happy. LOL

Wow! I checked out Sue's Sew EZ Designs and that $6.00 price is wonderful. I did read that her new shipment of Aurifil came in to retail at $12 a spool, but Sue's is discounting it to $7.50, which is still a good deal.

Thanks for the info katier825.

Annaquilts 07-21-2012 06:50 PM

This were I bought many spools before she ran low on certain colors. she is wonderful to deal with too.

Tristan has spools for $5.00, which is even better. I just wasn't sure about the shipping fees since it was coming from Canada.

nangars 07-21-2012 07:51 PM

Check out j Hittle's for your thread it is 8.38 a spool. Any one can order from them, great prices on everything.

jitkaau 07-22-2012 02:42 AM

I find the price discrepancies difficult to understand in my neck of the woods: It costs about $20 at the 3 lqs and $7.95 at the discount place...

117becca 07-22-2012 03:39 AM

Make sure when comparing prices to Guttermans' at JoAnn's that you're accounting for the yards on a spool of thread. Spools of thread at Joann's have much less thread these days. I had to do that w/ the Gutterman glazed cotton hand quilting thread. Gutterman for 220 yds was approx $2.75 at half price. YLI thread for 1000 yd spool is only about $8 - a much better deal. When I order the YLI, i just buy a couple of the big spools to have on hand because the shipping for 2 spools isn't different than 1 spool.

SunlitenSmiles 07-22-2012 04:03 AM

If ...... I had never used Aurifil, I was perfectly happy with threads like gutterman, mettler(sp?), YLI, sulky, etc.
now my machines and I are spoiled, Aurifil for piecing and King Tut for quilting...fortunately Santa knows and filled my stocking with Aurifil last year!!!!!!

Latrinka 07-22-2012 04:21 AM

Yep, everywhere you go, everything keeps going up, except our paychecks!

Thank you for recommending their thread. I was just looking at it the other day, but I was uncertain whether it would be good quality.

Wow! $20 a spool. That is hard to image, but very upsetting if we are heading in that direction.

mpspeedy 07-22-2012 06:24 AM

I like to use varigated thread for my Linus quilts as it saves changing thread for each one I make. I made the mistake of choosing a spool of varigeted Aurifil thread at my local Bernina Dealer /fabric store/ etc. etc. The price wasn't posted. Before I got to the cash register I decided that two would be better than one. I had a hard time hiding my surprise when the bill came to a little more than $25.00 for the two items. OUCH!! I will say that there seems to be a lot of thread on those spools. I have done four or five Linus quilts, loaded at least 6 or 7 bobbins and the first spool doesn't even look touched.

BellaBoo 07-22-2012 09:58 AM

If you use a lot of black bobbin thread this is the buy of the year: http://www.tristan.bc.ca/cart/produc...1&cat=7&page=3

You can get it at redrockthreads.com for 8.95 a spool

carolynjo 07-22-2012 10:41 AM

Aurifil is finer and does go farther, so maybe the cost is relative to what you get. I do use and like it.

margecam52 07-22-2012 12:18 PM

Most of my sewing/quilting/embroidery thread comes from either
http://www.threadart.com
or
http://www.metroemb.com

Both have wonderful embroidery threads, bobbin thread... Threadart also has cottons & rayons...and I love the metallics they sell.

FroggyinTexas 07-22-2012 01:23 PM

I love Coats and Clark, my sewing machines have never complained and it is expensive enough to satisfy my need for conspicuous consumption. dnf

Scissor Queen 07-22-2012 02:54 PM

Divide the price by the number of yards on the spool to find out the real cost of your thread. I'll bet some of you will be surprised at how much you're paying for "cheap" thread.

Jingle 07-22-2012 03:16 PM

Lots of things are going up. I have enough thread to last me a really long time. Buy what you like.

Dee 07-22-2012 07:38 PM

I but all my thread at Threadart.com. Good thread and reasonable.

MaryAnnMc 07-23-2012 02:57 AM

This is a quandary, isn't it? We all want to support our LQS, they have to charge that much because they have to keep the lights on, but we have to watch our budgets. I buy all over the place, and I'm rethinking just how high quality I need to do what I want to do. I haven't tried Aurfil yet, and now I probably won't. I was on my way to being a quilt snob, but I just can't afford it.

Rubesgirl 07-23-2012 03:37 AM

I do like the Aurifil thread best and so does my machine. It runs smoother than with the CC or Guttermann threads and there is much less lint. My LQS charges around $10.95 for a large spool, which lasts a long time. I've checked out the sites mentioned here, but by the time you pay their lower price and shipping (and tax, if they charge it), it comes out about the same (or more) as if I buy it locally. If I could find a great deal that didn't require me to purchase several spools to get the real discount, I'd do it; but for one or two spools at a time (not knowing what color I'll need next) I don't see that much of a savings. I understand that if you are purchasing a quantity, it would be a good amount of savings.

grann of 6 07-23-2012 04:01 AM

I buy my aurafil thread at www.createforless.com. But my long arm machine doesn't like it very well. I have trouble getting the tension just right with it. But I am going to check out some of those sites you guys have posted.

Just tried that website and got an "Access Denied" on the screen.
