i am redoing a bedroom in my house it wil be my new sewing room because i am needing more space (( imagine that )) but my question is what color are the walls in your sewing rooms ? i wanted to paint my walls yellow someting bright and cheerful but my sister says that i should paint the entire room white that way when looking at my material i will get the true color of them in the room if it is whita as opposed to it being yellow has anyone heard of this before or know anything about this ?
Thanks |
My sewing room is my family room and so it is light blue with white trim and a whole wall of white cabinets.

As much as I love bright colours, I must admit my sewing room has neutral colour walls, and they will be staying that way. When I pin something up on the wall, or hang it over a rail, nothing competes for my attention, it's a neutral background.
I wouldn't go for pure white, it's too clinical and cold. But a variation of white, something just off white, is a good idea. |
My walls are pale blue and it works well, though it is a big room and a very high ceiling (which is white) She is correct about the yellow. Though I don't htink that I would do white
|
The walls in my room are tangerine. NOT my choice. We rent, so we deal with what is here.
In the room I had, before I swapped rooms, it was a rosy mauve. |
My sewing room is a medium tan color with a rose tint. Very relaxing and I have no conflict with matching colors. I sure wouldn't pick stark white. Get a color you are comfortable with. Then watch your sewing, not the walls!
|
While I am a fan of bright colors, for a sewing room I prefer a very soft beige
neutral, doesn't affect the color of a project you may be working on. I know that yellow, in particular reflects back on everything in the room, giving it a "golden tint". The brighter the yellow, the more reflection. Likewise pink will give a rosy tint on reflected surfaces. |
I would pick a color that would make me feel good being in the room. One that would make me feel inspired, but not overwhelming. 8)
|
I have pink wallpaper, doesn't bother me at all, still can see what colors I'm sewing on just fine. Stick with what you like, you will be in there a lot hopefully.
|
I have yellow walls. Nice and cheery! My fabric colors look the same to me in any room.
|
We rent. So everything is white.
|
Mine is a light pinky lilac, with a medium blue carpet. I inherited the carpet, but before I painted the walls, they were a dark turqoise with bright, lime green stencilled squares up near the ceiling - not my taste at all.

I am almost done with the sale of our house, and when I took down all the quilts from the walls pinned patterns I didn't want to loose and drawings from the kids, I found walls that were yellow on the top half and green on the bottom half. It u to be my son's nursery. My new room is white, but again, soon I intend not to see much of the walls. I will have a design wall now, not too big, but is there.

Mine is Tinkerbell green with neutral carpet.

Mine is wallpapered. :-)
Judging by all the sewing rooms I've seen on here, and in the Quilting Library link (Sewing Rooms), in the Links section, I'd say go with whatever your heart desires. You're the one who needs to want to be in there! :-) Post a picture when you get it done? |
I cannot say what my room is, as I don't have one. But, reading the comments on reflective colors, possibly changing the look of your fabric, I think I would make one wall the off white to get true colors perspective. Maybe the one closest to your window. Then get loving and crazy on the other walls, that will be behind the shelves and cabinets, around the closets and doors etc. Put your favorite colors in areas you will see as you work, but not where you will have the best light to analyize the colors of your fabrics. I think the colors in your room should reflect your personality and inspire you to creation.

White, because I want to keep the colors as "pure" as possible while I am designing.
|
Terra Cotta and Cream! I love it so much my kitchen is getting the same.
|
Mine has brown paneling. Was there when I moved in. I don't believe I have had any trouble seeing the true colors. I have a great light and a nice big window.
|
Mine is white. Its bright in there even at night when I turn my light on
|
Mine is taupe, with white ceiling, doors, window and trim.
|
I rent so the walls are off white :(
|
My room is yellow with white cabinetry. I love yellow - it makes me happy. As for the true color of the fabric, I think the lighting makes more difference than the wall color.
We had a thread about the best color of a design wall, and I recall that white was not it. I think a light grey or beige flannel was preferred. I think you should pick a color that makes YOU feel good and that you could stand to stay in for long stretches of time. |
We built a room in our basement and I have a portion of it. The color on the wall is a bright orange! I love it!
|
I love deep, darker colors in some rooms, for me they seem to create a more relaxing environment. My office is a deep, dark blue and I love it. However, when I designed my sewing room I knew that use of dark saturated color would impact how fabrics looked on the design walls. Since white rooms are too stark for me, so I ended up picking a neutral color for the walls, Home Depot's Ralph Lauren brand in "Oatmeal" color, and then painted the ceiling a very bright white to bounce the light back down. It has worked out well for me.

I had a yellow and white sewing room. I loved the yellow walls! They're so much warmer than white. I never had a problem with colors in that room.
Go with what you love and what will make you happy in your room!! |
Thank you everyone for your replies i knew if i asked in here i would get some good advice !!
you guys are great :D |
I sew in my living room and the walls are rag rolled mauve on a pale grey background! The room is large and I think you should go with what you like and have lots of light! A design wall will audition your fabrics and blocks well. I use the flannel back of a large vinyl tablecloth and it works very well!
|
i have neutral so it never interferes with the fabric or designs
|
We just painted mine last weekend. I went with a very light tan. It, so far, is very relaxing, yet clean feeling enough to get me energized. If that makes any sense at all!!!
|
Mine are a medium brown, my choice. Paint them whatever color you want. Something you like. Besides , once you start filling them up with quilting supplies and quilts, you won't see them anyway! LOL
|
Mine is light yellow. The room is on the NW corner of the house and the only natural light is the late afternoon sun that's too hot here in the high desert to allow the curtains to be open, so I wanted BRIGHT! When I'm checking colors, I haul my fabrics outside and doublecheck to make sure I'm matching them correctly.
|
I just changed mine to red and white and I love it. It is very bright and cheery. My oldest sister made me a quilt top and I finished it and it is red/white on a twin bed in there. I change my rooms alot especially the valances. My husband always tells everyone if there is anything that you really like in here don't get use to it because it won't be there long. I love pretty curtains.

My room is in my rec room. Actually my sewing room is the rec room :)
At the moment the walls are a grey colour with some of that old 70s panelling. It is the one room in my house I havent' reno'ed yet.. It's coming though!!! I'm still playing with ideas myself of what colour I would like to paint my walls. I am also getting rid of the panelling! LOL |

Hello
Having a light, neutral color allows you to not only see colors better, but also allows you to put up wall hangings for each season and all will look nice. I have beige walls and ceilings with off white trim. Works well for hanging my wall hangings and also to put up your design wall. superquilter |
Just re-wallpapered mine and used an off white with a kind of shiny stripe pattern that makes the walls look like fabric. Brightens up the room without the stark or coldness of pure white. I also have a Daylight fixture that I love.

My walls are a light gold (desert sand) and they work, keeping me calm and the colors
