I work for out IT department and the first thing that I do when I buy a new pc or get one second hand; uninstall McAfee; it can slow your pc down alot. Also go under tools then options and on the general tab; delete the cookies, temp internet files and browsing history; all of these things really slow down a pc and sometimes can stop you from accessing internet sites. Depending on your version of windows; if you have the option to put in how many days to keep history; chose 0. Then every time you reboot it'll delete these files and keep them clean. The other suggestions here are also good things; like defrag; which is very easy.

1. Get rid of McAfee (I gave up on it when it was slowing down my computers) and get the free Microsoft Security Essentials. I've been running it on three computers for over two years now with no problems. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/secur...s/default.aspx
2. Download CCleaner http://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER and run this weekly.
3. Download the free version of Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/ This is one of the best programs for getting rid of viruses.
4. Download the free http://www.superantispyware.com/ This will alert you to any problems. While you cannot have two Security programs running at the same time you can and should have more than one anti-spyware program.
5. I use firefox as my browser and have WOT as an add-on. It will id unsafe sites: http://www.mywot.com/

I second that.

This is what works for me too-I have both Firefox and Internet Explorer installed. I only use Firefox for this board as IE is way too slow. There are some programs I run that do not support Firefox, so once a window pops up and tells me this, then I close it out and use Internet Explorer. I also use Kaspersky. Use CCleaner and disk cleanup everyday, have defrag set to run weekly. No problems! Remember to stay updated on everything. Set windows, antivirus, etc. to automatically check for updates.
