On Mon, I will be starting a discussion of fabric choices for the OBW,

For those that have the book and possibly the ruler, and always wanted to try it, you may be interested.

For those that have always wanted to try and don't have the book, you may want to think about getting it now as there are a few of us that are planning on starting one.

dakotamaid 01-23-2010 03:57 PM

OK, I'm not getting the OBW! Clarify, Please!

WooHoo!!! I can't wait :D:D:D

samroberts01 01-23-2010 04:13 PM

These blocks are just so cool looking, but they look way to hard for me yet! I will be watching you guys though for tips, I definatly want to do one of these when I am a little more experienced.

Barb_MO 01-23-2010 04:45 PM

that is one quilt I want to do...but can't start one at this time. I may be able to buy the book so I can follow along and get familiar with the process.

cutebuns 01-23-2010 04:57 PM

To be honest, it is one of the easiest blocks that I have ever done, there really isn't anything to it, feel free to watch and see just how simple it really is.

Really? It just looks like it would be complicated, but I will definatly watch and see. I would love to do those!

STAR 01-23-2010 05:05 PM

what is the name of the book?? I have always wanted to do one of these

cutebuns 01-23-2010 05:21 PM

The book is called One Block Wonder, there is a second one as well, Though you could also use the Stack n Wack as well,

OBW is a type of stack n wack

THe block has 6 pieces that are all the same, it is really easy.

amma 01-23-2010 05:44 PM

One Block Wonders Encore is the second one.
It has much of the same basic info as the first, and has added the cube blocks. I believe a third book is coming out in April?

cutebuns 01-23-2010 05:48 PM

I am not up on what is coming out. Thanks for the info Amma, I hope that a lot decide to give it a try

Esqmommy 01-23-2010 05:52 PM

Should I get a special ruler?

littlehud 01-23-2010 06:03 PM

I can't wait. Thanks for starting this.

Will it be on this thread ?

cutebuns 01-23-2010 06:17 PM

I will start a new one for the actual discussion,

dglvr 01-23-2010 06:28 PM

Can you post a picture of the book and ruler needed?
Next time I'm in town I'll find them.

MamaBear61 01-23-2010 07:21 PM

I want to try this method sometime too after seeing the one posted last week

blahel 01-23-2010 07:24 PM

good timing..i have had the book for a while and I am in the process of trying to find the right material at the right price so will be checking out what you all do and hopefully joining in!

cutebuns 01-23-2010 07:27 PM

I don't have a picture of the book. I no longer have the book. Mom has it at the moment. But if you search it it will come and I will get a picture of the ruler. Though you can use a regular ruler as well if it has the angles on it. I have used both.

cutebuns 01-23-2010 07:28 PM

The ruler I have is called a super 60 but there is more than one that has that angle. It can be used for other blocks as well.

obie2 01-23-2010 07:31 PM

I sure want to give this quilt a try. I just today, ordered the book from Sew Thankful. I am looking forward to this.

cutebuns 01-23-2010 07:35 PM

Great! It is a lot of fun and adictive. One of the few things you don't need a pattern for. Once you figure it out. It is full speed forward.

Esqmommy 01-23-2010 07:53 PM

so this one? I wonder if Joanne's has it and I can use a 40% or 50% off coupon??

Esqmommy 01-23-2010 07:55 PM

Or these...better prices for sure. Do you think one will work?

cutebuns 01-23-2010 08:36 PM

Either will work, the bonus with the super 60 is the other end, it has the size you need it you are to fill in instead of cut off the little points along the one side, Most people just cut them off, if I am in a hurry I cut them off, if not, I like the look of them,

woody 01-24-2010 02:27 AM

I also have the book, and will be getting the ruler next week and hopefully some fabric too, so I would love to follow along.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us

gaigai 01-24-2010 06:37 AM

I used my regular ruler for my OBW. Any ruler will do as long as it has a 60 degree line. It was very easy! Unless you just want an excuse to get another ruler! LOL

I have a new ruler with the 60 degree on it, Do I need to buy the book, or can I be taught without it? :-D :-D
I am so over my budget for this month

Blue Bell 01-24-2010 07:30 AM

How exciting. I will look for the book. Thank you for doing a tutorial.

Well, I can only speak for myself, of course, and I can be really dense, but I really needed the illustrations in the book to show me how to stack and align the fabric. It's one thing to read the directions, but actually SEEING it was what made it make sense to me. And that's the most complicated part of an OBW, in fact it's the ONLY complicated step.

Both ebay and amazon have the book for $15.00.

I'm not going to be able to join in this, because my sewing room is still completely packed and I still have lots to do in the old house, plus I have a bunch of other MUST DO NOW's before I can play. I'm so far behind at this point I'm about to meet myself coming!

Katrine 01-24-2010 08:10 AM

I'm with Gaigai - I think the book is essential, preferably the One Block Wonder Encore as it includes the detail for all the hollow cubes, which the first book doesn't have.
I think the advice in there to use the 60 degree triangle is good, it is much easier than a ruler too - and she recommends not to trim triangle points - it is much harder to match up seamlines on the hexagons without them.
There are several very good tips in there too, as well as variations on border treatments.
I've made 5 of these quilts but still have the book open when preparing fabric to cut.

Esqmommy 01-24-2010 08:16 AM

Woo hoo... I found the ruler! I have both books already as I've been wanting to make one of these. I must've bought the ruler back when I got the books. Now, for the fabric...I understand it's actually good to have fabric with some movement in it, and to try and limit the number of colors. Not just two...but not 15 shades either. Is that true? Experts, your opinions please?

cutebuns 01-24-2010 10:28 AM

A variety of colors or shades is a good thing. Other wise most of the blocks will look exactly the same. The book also has examples of fabric choices that they figure are good and bad and why they think that.

Esqmommy 01-24-2010 11:14 AM

okay...I better start reading! It's a nice ugly day here..perfect for all things domestic!

cutebuns 01-24-2010 11:45 AM

And I am going to be here if anyone gets stuck and needs a little more than the book, different hints from a different perspective. and I am not the only one that will be able to help.

BKinCO 01-24-2010 12:01 PM

Dang it! Went to FOUR stores today to find the book, wound up ordering it off Amazon, now wondering if I should have ordered the 2nd one too????????????? UGHHHHHH

Dkm 01-26-2010 08:59 AM

Keep us posted. I have wanted to do one of these, but thought you would have to be very, very precise and no room for error. hope those that try this will post their thoughts along the way.
