I've heard a glass of wine is a good idea...although I'm sure 'whatever relaxes you' would work too.

no1jan 05-23-2010 05:59 PM

I drink water and coffee only whenever I am sewing. I am a very big water drinker. So there is always a glass or bottle of water within reach. Even if we go into a store, I have my bottle of water in my purse.

Once I am done for the evening that is a different story. I try and relax with a small glass of red wine. But go straight to bed after.

If I ever drank while sewing my 1/4" seam which I have a hard time at anyway, would probably wonder from 1" to 1 1/2" to 1/8" and so on.

I have not learned stippling yet, but maybe I should try that after having a glass. It might not be consistent, but it would be all over the place. :) :)

Mousie 05-23-2010 07:15 PM

only water and always in plastic cup with a handle that is no where near anything important!

CarrieAnne 05-23-2010 07:25 PM

Just coffee or water, wine would just put me to sleep! Coffees bad though too, because I have spilt it and stained stuff....it ALWAYS falls on the white, ya know!

PurpleBecca 05-23-2010 07:27 PM

Coffee! But its often cold by the time I get to it. I am really clumsy, but so far - no major disasters!

As for alcohol - I am learning as I get older that wine is just a bad idea for me!! The reason I am writing this at 4.20am our time is because I drank too much wine last night and I just CANT Sleep when I drink alcohol anymore!!! (drink alot maybe twice a year!!!)

However - My husband used to pour me a glass of wine while I was handsewing in the evening - but I never got a round to drinking it!! too engrossed!

I have never drunk wine and then operated the machine though......

quilter2 05-23-2010 08:34 PM

Always have my glass of sweet Ice Tea

I go To The Sea To Breathe 05-23-2010 08:37 PM

I am a lemon water drinker..at my machine.

JanieW 05-23-2010 08:57 PM

sometimes my sewing drives me to drink!!!

KiwiQuilter 05-23-2010 09:42 PM

Oh dear... :)

I almost always have a cup of tea. Sometimes in the evening - I can be seen with a glass of wine, but only for the "boring" sewing bits :)

sewcrafty 05-24-2010 03:13 AM

I usually have a large ice tea standing by. Remember there are sharp moving parts there!!

I saw my sister when she was little get a sewing needle go through her finger and UGH!!!! I still remember that after almost 50 years!!!

weatheread 05-24-2010 03:38 AM

Diet Dr Pepper or Ice Tea or Ice Water I have to have something to drink but always with some kind of lid on it because I too can be a clutz

beachlady 05-24-2010 03:59 AM

Usually just ice water or sometimes just ice - love to eat ice!

Kathy N 05-24-2010 04:01 AM

Sugar Free Kool aid is my beverage of choice while I sew!

Ms Grace 05-24-2010 05:02 AM

I always have Coke when I'm sewing. :D

wvdek 05-24-2010 05:17 AM

Usually water or flavored herb teas. Sometimes coffee and occasionally a soda. Never diet anything. Believe it is hazardous to your health, habit forming, and can't stand the taste.

My containers alway's have a lid on them. So far no spills.

soleegirl 05-24-2010 09:52 AM

water only with maybe a little lemon slice. lemon slice keeps my brain functioning

Life is cruel that way, isn't it? I am battling the same discussion with myself because the vino isn't exactly my friend anymore but some friends are just hard to let go. ho-hum!

LucyInTheSky 05-24-2010 10:42 AM

I keep a water bottle on the floor.

My friend just took up quilting. She pieced 3 quilts in 2 days (while working FT, being a student, and planning her wedding). I asked how she did that. She says she just sits with a beer next to her machine and sews. Lol!

allie1448 05-25-2010 03:27 AM

A nice cup of tea (british style!) never placed anywhere near to sewing or fabric!! A glass of wine before I FMQ! just too loosen those shoulders! lol

damaquilts 05-25-2010 03:42 AM

Only water with lemon, coffee first thing in the morning. . Wine puts me to sleep. I can't drink anymore either. Once in a great while I will have a Kahlua and cream at home. Or when I go out a glass of white wine, red gives me a headache, Or if I am really lucky the place I am eating at has Pear Cider. Love that stuff. Always limit myself to one however. Get really clumsy and loud if I have anymore and embarrass my daughter. lol

Lostn51 05-25-2010 04:24 AM

Oh hell sounds like my kinda thread LOL!!!

9 times out of 10 I am always walking around with a large glass of iced tea. Drink coffee in the morning to wake up and get going then swap over to tea at breakfast and thats the only thing I drink for the rest of the day.

I probably need to cut back and go to more water but it is flavored water isn't it?!?!? I am a tea-a-holic from the word go!!

Now I have been known to swap out for Long Island Teas later in the afternoon or evening and used a treadle a few times. But I have never been sloshed and went out and tried to sew in my studio. Then again I really never get sloshed at any time, I hate hang overs!!

The last time my buddies and I did get pretty toasted "Bench Racing" on a Friday night, we shot a set of flames on a brand new BMW Z3 roadster just because we wanted to see what it would look like. He just picked the car up for his wife that night.

Billy, I bet that treadle really flies on long island ice tea. I bet your feet are a blur, in more ways than one. LOL

jolo 05-25-2010 04:48 AM

I have an electric cup warmer that sits on a table beside my machine, but needless to say one cup usually lasts all day. lol

mjsylvstr 05-25-2010 05:04 AM

Maybe water or a diet soda.........

but quiting time is 4PM to join hubby for "wine time"....

one glass and then get dinner prepared
.....dishes, clean-up and back to the sewing room.......

now is that a day or isn't it?

Works for me....MaryJane

Crickett Sweet 05-25-2010 05:19 AM

I love to have my red wine in the evening weather I'm sewing or not. I always have wine with me on retreats. Only rule - no rotary cutting afer wine is poured.

shopaholic97 05-25-2010 05:55 AM

I love to have a glass of red wine when I am hand sewing but never while I am cutting or piecing - Strictly water or club soda then.

gramquilter2 05-25-2010 06:21 AM

Ice cold diet-coke and Starbucks is always close to my right hand. So far have never spilled on anything. Hope it's the same today.

Because of the medications I take, if I had an alcoholic drink, I would fall asleep and get either the dreaded keyboard face if here on the computer or something new and interesting like.. hmmm... sewing machine or cutting board face. Not thinking those would be pretty sights either.
I am supposed to drink lots of water, and keep it nearby, but must confess that once I get involved in cutting or sewing, it sits forgotten until the body requires me to take a break.

Olivia's Grammy 05-25-2010 08:16 AM

Hot tea in the morning, in the winter hot tea in the evening as well. Water the rest of the time. To many of my family members are addicted to the hard stuff. I chose not to drink.

hereca622 05-25-2010 08:24 AM

A bottle of water only. At our retreats, some of the ladies bring wine for the evening hours. I put a sign on the cutting table that said," FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS, DRINK AND USE A ROTARY CUTTER".

It was a joke, with a serious undertone.

Jshep 05-25-2010 08:41 AM

Now the beer I could do, but not when I am cutting. No telling what I would create. LOL

PennyLynn 05-25-2010 08:49 AM

I always have water or dt dr pepper, I purchased a drink holder that hooks onto the table from a local scrapbook store, it keeps the drink away from my projects.

SandyMac 05-25-2010 08:54 AM

coffee water and pepsi, not in the sewing room I'm just to clumsy .Yesterday I stabbed myself in th finger taking a button off a shirt

Tinabodina 05-25-2010 09:03 AM

I drink a splash of orange juice and diet 7-up with ice. If I had a glass of wine or anything else, I would never get anything finished.

Melinda in Tulsa 05-25-2010 09:32 AM

For me, I drink a pot of coffee in the morning then switch over to ice tea. Yes, I do keep a cup in the sewing room at all times, and knock on wood, have never had a mishap. I'm not much of a drinker and have a Margarita the few times a year we go out for mexican food. But I learned a hundred years ago to limit myself to only one.

iltoaz 05-25-2010 09:36 AM

Only water and not on my sewing table. Don't need to electrocute myself!
