as a child I slept under antique (even then!!) quilts - sure wish I had them now... they were my great great granmother's I think

I have several my Granny made. She was born in 1876 and died in 1953. I treasure them.

My only quilt from my grandmother is made of wool suiting material scraps and backed with grey striped pillow ticking fabric. The squares that make up the top are a mixture of reds, browns and blacks although I can't imagine anyone having ordered a red wool coat or pants back then in order to get these scraps. It was made in 1910 by my grandmother and her two sisters for her wedding in April 1912. Her sister Cecilia ran a tailoring shop in Guelph Ontario so had plenty of scraps. The quilt is heavy and was always on my mother's bed as a child and then on mine. My mom memded it many times (she used coloured denim and corduroy and I've mended it too although I got old wool suiting scraps from one of the older ladies at church who kindly shared a shoe box full. It's not a beautiful quilt but it is one of the very few possessions left from my grandmother who died in 1937. My daughter who is named after her great-grandmother will inherit it someday.

We had one old quilt (over 100 years old now) from my maternal grandmother. My sister found a simple stuffed cat pattern, and cut and sewed the quilt pieces into stuffed cats for each of us. It was a wonderful way to share one quilt among 7 women. I have a small piece of a crazy quilt my other grandmother did. That's all I have of theirs. We have one quilt from my DH's family, but we have no information on it. Found it in with his mother's things years after she passed, when his dad passed, it was in there.

I have a double wedding ring quilt that my great grandmother, grandma and my mom made . The quilt was probably made in late teens or early 1920's. It is entirely hand made, little squares about 1 inch in size, no machine stitching. I posted it earlier, I think under double wedding ring quilts.

I've been thinking of asking this very question. Glad you did. I have a quilt that has been handed down through the years to the oldest daughter in the family. Happened to be me this go 'round. It's a quilt that was made before the Civil War. During the war, it was buried in the ground to hide it from the Yankees (the original family was in Virginia). I'll post a picture in the next few days. You can even see the cotton seeds when the quilt is held up to the light.

Yes, I love my families quilts! These came from both my side of the house and my husband's family. And, I might add, because of the precise handpiecing and handquilting of my precious relatives, I never let myself quilt because I did not want to place myself within their critical eyes. That makes me sad now that they have all passed because I know they would have only encouraged me even more and taught me so much. However, I am presently in my sixties and slowly self-teaching myself the art of quilting. I truly love it!
