Here is an excerpt: “Over the last four years, Wal-Mart has gradually removed fabric from its stores, and now operates approximately 1,800 stores with full fabric .... down from approximately 3,300 stores in 2006. Until recently we expected Wal-Mart to remove the full fabric department from approximately 1,000 additional stores….Wal-Mart management is now changing its fabric plans. They cite customer requests for the product and an opportunity to drive incremental traffic. …Finally, Wal-Mart plans to selectively add full fabric back where customers asked for the product. At this stage, no formal rollout plan has been announced.”

Isn’t this wonderful? I know I have missed the fabric department at Wal-Mart!

It would be wonderful to hear back from you if and when you see changes in the wal-mart fabric department. Pictures of the return would be even better and could help move this process along. I also suggest that you voice your opinion to Wal-Mart store managers about the loss of fabric. They seem to be listening again – YEA!

looking forward to hearing from you

My local Walmart never lost it, but is scheduled for a remodel, I understand from other stores in the area, that this is when Walmart typically eliminated the fabric department. I have been dreading the day, so hopefully they will keep it when the remodel happens. Iam in Walmart about 3 to 5 times a week, and always check the fabrics to see whats new! Thanks for the hopeful info, I love their Nathan fabrics with the free patterns each month.

I love the news that fabric may be coming back to Walmart. Once upon a time I got all my quilting material from them. It allowed me to make a quilt any time I wanted to with out a lot of running around looking for the right design. I have Hancocks here in Pearl River, LA. Joanns left after Katrina. Covington is very close to me. Please keep us updated if they do put it back. I will check at the Slidell store everytime I go in. Can you see me jumping up and down?!! Thanks for this great news!

Thanks for sharing the link to Facebook. I posted a request there pointing out that grocery shopping and the fabric department are the main reasons I go to Walmart.

I am not entirely sure how to find out. Wal-Mart's main focus this year is to get thier core customer back. They are going to try to go back to basics (ie basic, not trendy apparel). Fabric is part of that push but they will not comment on thier plans until they are finalized. I suggest you continue to ask for and @ fabric at your local Wal-Mart, post a reqest on Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/walmart?ref=ts#!/topic.php?uid=159616034235&topic=22881

I have purchased fabric at WM way back some of which was quite nice and some of which was suitable for dog beds. However, there a lot of quilters who just can't pay $9 or more a yard and this would tap a market that has been shut out. I have a friend who haunts the resale shops for yardage and clothing that she uses for her quilts. Joanne's has great on line sales. I've stumbled onto their web site and email list and have purchased a lot of fabric that I never intended to purchase and so far it has all been quite decent. All I ask is that the woof and warp be on 90 degree angle, the print also be straight along the weave and that the dye be reasonably stable. I have had some pricey stuff that didn't meet those criteria.

Went to a small town in Ark about 3 weeks ago and bought several pc's flannel. They also had a fall ciolor display of bolts that were just great. Not $1.00 a yard either. Will cross my fingers that we get it back in our store. Hate driving so far for a spool of thread.
