My Black and Decker started smoking one day but thank goodness I was right there to unplug it. However I have mine on a serge protector which I turn off when I leave the room. In all my years of ironing this was the first time an iron did this.

Yikes! So glad you and hubby were home. I always unplug mine as I'm afraid the cats will jump on the board and knock it/iron over, turning it on and - disaster. Glad to hear you avoided catastrophe!

I love your Avatar! Look like hydrangeas (sp?)

Thank for this warning! I own a Rowenta also and I will be unplugging it from now on!

This happened to a friend of mine and she called the Rowenta people and they assured her that she must have done something really wrong because that would never happen with one of their irons. Needless to say she wasn't pleased!!!

Hmmm...I have mine on a power strip that gets turned off, but now I am thinking I need to unplug altogether. Thanks for the heads up...

Thank you for the reminder. As of today, it is unplugged.

Me too. In case of lightening strike, I think the equipment is more protected. Plus, I can power off with the touch of my foot.

I always unplug my iron, check to see that everything is turned off in my studio & that the shades are pulled (don't want my Bernina 830 stolen, it sits in front of a window). My DH is Very security minded. I guess its just habit that I do this stuff every night.

I keep my plugged in all the time but hubby installed one of the small panels with an on/off switch.

It is wonderful, just the flick of the switch and my iron is ready to go.
