Have any of you seen how Ricky Timms makes his "one straight stitch" flying geese. If you don't know it , I may be able to find my copy of the directions. Only problem with them is it makes them 3 dimentional but you could stitch down the dimensional sides when quilting it I guess.

I mark mine with a Sharpie and then sew to the right of the line... I must get these squares done so my barn buddy can help me lay this quilt out when she comes Thursday!! Must...get...done..... |
Yes I made one as a sample. Not good for making alot of them and they waste material because of the folding.

I know what you mean about coming up short. I read that the measurement on the ruler should be on the fabric not off. Also someone told me to sew a "scant" 1/4 inch. I often move my needle off of the line. Of course, away from the side of the square.
I have the problem with paper piecing, cutting the piece of fabric enough to cover the paper. Happy quilting! |
The hint on page one about sewing just off the line worked perfectly!! Everything matched up and was the exact size after that tiny adjustment--a few even needed trimming. :D

I agree that "scant" seam is the best.....I also found a site this a.m. that is a No waste method for making flying geese units. www.patchpieces.com
I've been hesitant to do the flying geese, but this method looks like it has major possibilities and requires no special rulers. Love this site |
Hello, I'm new here and was reading through the posts and just had to tell you about the way I make Flying Geese. I'm not saying it's the way for everyone but give it a try. There are several online tutorials but here is one that is printable. :

cAN SOMEONME EXPLAIN HOW TO MAKE FLYING GEESE THE ELEANOR bURNS WAY?
|

I use her method and love it. Only do the old way if I need one.
Got all her rulers even tho you can use a regular ruler. It is just easier to use her ruler. Easy to figure the size you need by taking the lenght of goose you want and add 1 1/2 inches for the first square then add another 1 1/2 inchs for the second square. |
