I use Ricky Tims method. You have to be very careful with the quilting, if you are doing it by machine.

I followed a super-easy flying geese pattern once but they didn't turn out the same size--my fault, I know. Just watched a video showing how to use the FG ruler--each one comes out same size. Think I'll make it my next quilt-related purchase.

I have watched the Ricky Timms method at least 6 times, and am dying to try....but havent had the time yet. I just finished a quilt, so I may be able to this coming November vacation time.....

I prefer the second method shown here. I've done lots of flying geese this way. Fast and very accurate.
http://www.connectingthreads.com/tut...ek_1__D15.html The neat thing about this method is you don't need any specialty ruler and you can make FG any size you want. |
i use Alex Anderson's method---explained in her book---Keep Quilting with Alex Anderson- a book of star sampler blocks- i had problems with flying geese blocks-and avoided them like the plague until i learned this method- now i don't mind them at all- they always come out well-and fairly quickly=
sometimes i foundation piece them-if i am doing long rows of them- that's easier - more precise if you are doing alot in a row. |
Here's a PDF for the No Waste Method with a handy chart for those interested.

Would love for some one to do a tutorial with these rulers. I am considering them.

I worked at El's Quilt in a Day store in San Marcos, CA for almost 6 years. Loved working there, but "retired" this year after my husband retired as "work" got in the way of our traveling!!I also avoided making flying geese El's way as I thought it to be labor intensive. Then I was at a QIAD retreat and making one of El's patterns that required flying geese. So I dove in, used her Flying Geese ruler and I have not turned back! Her method is the BEST way to make flying geese and the flying geese come out perfect every time. I have changed other patterns and used her method of making flying geese whenever I can because they are truly worth the extra work!!!
