There are many great ideas here. What came to my mind would to use a chevron pattern, which is very popular now. I have found a lot of the color grey incorporated into fashion designs lately.
Enjoy making the quilt.

My daughter and husband didn't want to find out the gender of their first baby so I made a mint green and yellow quilt and she got a lot of baby items in the same color wave.

Love your quilt and the color choices you made. I think the HST can be tricky because you are working with the bias of the fabric and it's easy to stretch them when you iron/press them. Love your comment about baby complaints but seriously, your quilt won't get any complaints....
