I am going to the quilt show in Paducah this year, it is my first show and I am so excited!! is anyone else going, and what should i be sure and not miss? :-D

shaverg 03-23-2010 04:31 AM

Ninnie, I am so jealous. I have never been, but have always wanted to go.

You're going to have a great time.

mic-pa 03-23-2010 04:51 AM

the show of coarse, then Eleanor Burns shop, the museum, Hancocks of Paducah and the Kentucky Oaks Mall. All of them have quilts and vendors. You will be over whelmed as I was the first time. Wish I were going this year, but its not to be. Enjoy

DebraK 03-23-2010 04:56 AM

Sounds like it should be the title of a movie ;-)

ToucanSam 03-23-2010 04:57 AM

I'm jealous but happy for you! You're going to have a blast!!

fabric-holic 03-23-2010 05:23 AM

I've never been but I'd love to go someday.
If it were held during the summer I'd have a better chance of getting away from work.
It's only a 6 hour drive from me so it wouldn't be too difficult to get there.
I hope you have a great time and maybe meet some of the people who are part of this great board.

cjomomma 03-23-2010 05:40 AM

I'm only 45 minutes away from Paducah and have never gone to the quilt show. The reason being is I have a hard time handling large crowds of people sometimes, so I just try to avoid crowds whenever I can. One day I am gonna force myself to go. I think!!!!!!

knlsmith 03-23-2010 07:13 AM

OOO ME ME ME! LOL I am going and bringing my big strong bag man with me!! (My hubby) we bought and paid for our hotel room in November'ish. Have to stay in Marion Illinois, but only 45 min on interstate (or less if I drive and he doesnt *snicker sniker*)

Woo Hoo Can't wait SQUEAL

BellaBoo 03-23-2010 07:49 AM

I have gone every year for the last few years. I go alone. I can't stand to have someone with me at a quilt show that will say are you ready to eat? or you going to stay here any longer? Didn't you see this yesterday? My feet hurt, I'm hot, I'm thirsty, I think I need to sit down for awhile. I know even if they don't complain I have to ask, are you hungry, tired, need to rest? Nope, not for me. I go there to get my quilt motivation, my shopping, my quilt time. I drive there about 5 hours away, I park the car at Hancock's and stop by every so often to put my packages in the trunk. I ride the shuttles to every quilting stop. When I'm ready I go to the motel for the night. If you have the chance to go, GO! One day I might not be able to drive or walk all day, or have the means to go so I'm going while I can. I don't want to look back and say why didn't I do that when I could.

PurplePassion 03-23-2010 08:39 AM

Bella Boo; you are one smart women!! I want to go to so many places and see so many things. I would love to go to Paduca; but my bad knees tell me NO.

My husband loves watching me be happy. he likes going to quilt shows and looking in amazement at all the hard work people do. I am 37 and he is 41 and it's funny to see the seasoned quilters talk as we pass by. My hubby always wears camo and sticks out, too funny. But we have a BALL! And other than planning meals and/or snacks (he is newly diabetic) he won't be any trouble. i already told him how much I plan to spend, and I am sure he is doubling that in his mind! LOL he is also VERY handy at carrying things.

Ninnie 03-23-2010 11:06 AM

My cousin, jetwv, and I are going together! She has been before, so I will be in good hands  I want to see everything
Does anyone know if they allow you to take pictures?

dajefu 03-23-2010 11:10 AM

I am very interested in going to this quilt show as my 71 year old mother lives a short distance from Paducah (Central City) and she has never been to one. What do we need to do? Do we need to make reservations for any shows or can we just show up and do what we want when we get there? We won't need hotel of course, but I want to do everything we can! thanks for any help you can throw my way.

I'm jealous too. be sure to take lots of pics.

What a lucky duck...I would love to go.

Margie

bsquilter 03-24-2010 03:36 AM

My DH is taking me. He stands in line to pay while I move on to the next vendor. He also enjoys the quilts. This year I am excited because I have a friend with a quilt there.
We live a few hours drive this year, so with no motel bill I think that means more money to spend.

Don't miss the wooden "quilt" at the museum.

Definitely. I saw it last time we were there. Unbelievable. Looked so real!

I, too, am very jealous. I want to go to that show so badly. Maybe next year, if I start planning now. I have heard it is difficult to find rooms, etc.

Ginaky 03-25-2010 04:04 AM

I'm going for 2 days! We have reservations at KY Dam Village for the week. My hubby says he's going with me one day and then he'll golf or fish or something the rest of the time. It will be my first time there, I did go to Knoxville to it last year. I've been saving my money for months!

Karen's Kreations 03-25-2010 05:11 AM

Next time check out the motels in Mayfield KY. It's only a 20 minute drive from Paducah - I stayed there last year.

Karen's Kreations 03-25-2010 05:13 AM

I went last year - staying home this year. Don't miss Hancocks or the mall. Be sure you wear comfortable shoes & take a bottle of water. It gets very crowded and sometimes warm - depending on the weather. Have fun!

sewjoyce 03-25-2010 05:21 AM

My BFF and I are doing a day trip to Paducah -- it's almost an annual pilgrimage....Since the hotel where the show used to be is now closed, I'm not sure who will be where. However, take your walking shoes, your camera and a charge card

After you visit Hancocks of Paducah -- go down the same road a bit and visit the Hobby Lobby -- they always have special sales too...

And don't forget to sample the food vendors outside of the show. There is a wonderful little stand that sells the best BBQ you've ever eaten as well as another little stand that sells strawberry shortcake...

sandpat 03-25-2010 05:33 AM

I'm sooo jealous!!!! But really happy for you Ninnie, I know you'll have a blast! Take the BIG tote!

stitchinwitch 03-25-2010 06:15 AM

I hope you all have rooms already because they are always booked up. If you go that far, go over the bridge to Metropolis Illinois and check out the huge Superman statue, and also Harrah's Casino! For the quilt show, make sure you have comfortable shoes, lots of patience, and credit cards or $$$$. It might not be a bad idea to take a bottle of water and a snack altho they DO have a cafeteria - enjoy the vendors - my favorite part with all the new items!! Have fun!

Nanjun 03-25-2010 08:19 AM

Sounds like much fun. I went to a quilt show in Houston, Tx years ago. I could walk then, lol. Had a good time, we were a bus load. Go if you can it is something to see.

rnjoy 03-25-2010 08:20 AM

I usually go every year, at least for the past 8 years. This year due to doctoring things won't be going. I really miss it. I always take a full schedule of classes as that is my passion. My sister, cousin, and a quilting buddy go and they take less classes. I see the quilt show and vendors between classes. Always hit Hancocks, Eleanor's show is a hoot, visit the book store and the mall. Some times try to see local quilt shows too if we find out about them. There are usually church dinners that you can get into for a nice meal at a reasonable price and lots of interesting quilting folks. Enjoy and remember you may not be able to see it all the first time. We always go a day early and do some of that too...Will be wishing I were there in April...

rnjoy 03-25-2010 08:24 AM

Forgot to mention I always take a ton of pics of the quilts. Main problem is waiting till you can get a clear shot without a dozen people in front. You can't take pics of the vendors booths and quilts unless you ask. I often get a pic if I am buying a pattern or the blocks of the shows shop hop so I have a good idea of the colors and fabric that were being used but I always ask first.

sewjoyce 03-25-2010 08:28 AM

And don't forget to buy a t-shirt -- I have one for each year that I've been. They are always so cute and they have several in different styles to please everyone.....Last year I bought the bright red one

shrabar 03-25-2010 08:52 AM

Don't miss anything if this is your first you may want to go slow & go back & see everything again you will miss thing the first time I bring a note pad & wright down what I want to go back & see again . What booths are there & what they are giving away like information which is very important, I have been a few times was there last year, I only live about 2 hours from there.

Nanci T 03-25-2010 09:03 AM

I am going too! i am SO SO excited! I am meeting up with a childhood friend, and we will spend the time getting caught up and taking in ALL the sights! Leaving hubbies at home, will be just the two of us. She has gone previously, so will be the tour guide. I can't wait!

judithb 03-25-2010 09:23 AM

I am turning green! Have been to Houston several times, its close. One day I will drive to KY. I know you will have a great time!

peppermint31 03-25-2010 10:03 AM

I have gone several times and my advice is to go for a minimum of 2 days. 3 would be much better. I went with a bus group to the one in Chicago for 1 day and didn't enjoy that. Rush, rush, rush trying to see everything & feeling like I missed 1/2 of it. Never again. I take 2 days for sure!

Shemjo 03-25-2010 11:19 AM

I am going! will be there on Thursday, the 22nd. I am going by bus from a LQS. Let the driving to them and rest going and coming home. Have done the bus thing for several years, and it is the best I can do, can't stay the whole show, although I did that one year, and LOVED it!
You can take photos of the quilts! I have bought their book with pictures so I don't miss any, but also thake my own photos of my favs. I was able to take photos with some of the quilters next to their quilts and that was neat.
You will LOVE it Bella, but do wear comfortable shoes, and other clothing as well, in layers, and the temps can change in various venues. Carry a water bottle!
Solo, or with friends, it is an awesome experience.
How will we know when we meet other forum members? Were we going to have a picture of Admin on our person somehow?

We could all wear Gorilla suits.....

judithb 03-25-2010 12:33 PM

Sewjoyce: I love your kitty. Is it a Maine coon?

Shemjo 03-25-2010 12:39 PM

Sewjoyce, my mother made a gorrilla costume for my brothers a lifetime ago. I wonder who has it now, I think it is in Wisconsin!
