I've learned to answer the question of "do you sew?" with "I only sew quilts." If I'm asked if I make quilts I say "Yes but I only make quilts for myself."

I get this a lot too... and I hate doing alterations. Regardless, I ended up at the high school with my serger hemming 20+ choir dresses. I'm willing to do it for the kids at school but am trying to learn to say no to others...

Love Candance's response :)

.
My hubby's aunt did alterations, including replacing zippers in jeans. So he assumes I ought to enjoy doing that.

I'd rather birth a horse that replace a zipper in jeans.

Hey, Don't knock it till you have tried it. Alterations bring in a lot of money. I think my husband married me because I could do things like repair the pockets in his jeans and cook from scratch. His first wife could do neither and was proud of it. If you wanted some extra money for quilt stuff you could earn it real fast doing even basic alterations or repairs. Ask anyone who has been a bridesmaid lately how much it cost them to have the dress hemmed, altered or fitted.

My charge for replacing a zipper in jeans would be about a thousand dollars.

Hemming I'd do for a price.

I made some dolly diapers for the 3 granddaughters and this reminded me why..... I DO NOT DO CLOTHES!!!!!! i would rather buy new that have to patch.

I always tell people that my good sewing machine only does quilting which can be quite complicated :) What they don't realise is that I only to use the straight stitch most of the time.

That was quick thinking. Kind of did that this past Sat. Waited a customer that was handed over to me. They were shopping for a maid of honnor dress. Then they needed someone to make it, I said that I lived in a town which was 35 miles away, that they didn't want. I was glad because the dress is going to be ov camoflage knit with bright orange.
Yea good thinking on your part.

I would have said, "Sure, $20 a pair"... He would have ran away screaming or paid it and you'd have some quilting money. Pants hems are a breeze.
