I only quilt also, I use to make clothes and now I hate to sew a button on, maybe I am just lazy.

Sewing was my first love, quilting came about 4 years ago. I still do limited alterations for people. I at one time was a professional tailor and dress maker, left that business about 20 years or so ago. I do charge for the alterations I do & I have my steady customers & I still enjoy it.

I find it is a quick way to make pocket money.

His first wife could do neither and was proud of it. If you wanted some extra money for quilt stuff you could earn it real fast doing even basic alterations or repairs. Ask anyone who has been a bridesmaid lately how much it cost them to have the dress hemmed, altered or fitted.

I do alterations for people, not so much any more. But they want miracles for $5. I don't know who you know that is making $$$$$$s from alterations but it is not here in PA. People who think you sew at your kitchen table expect the world for a little money as possible. Now I sew for a select few people that I know and can trust to not take advantage of me.

When heariang stories like this I often think of this quote: ' Asking a quilter to mend is like asking Picasso to paint the bathroom!!!' Don't know where I heard this, but I like it!!

That was fast thinking on your part.

I believe if you have a sewing machine, every body thinks you do alterations. I have a friend who keeps telling me since I have so many machines, I should open an alterations business. What do the number of machines have to do with anything? LOL. I just keep explaining - I like to make quilts - not alter clothes.
