When I go to the fabric shops they usually have a bucket/basket full of thread for $1.00 apiece. I pick a lot of those up for piecing like the hexies on the back. That way I'm not using my better thread. I have a lot of thread from estate sales that I use also. I keep those threads separate and only use for projects like hexies and yo yos. Going to press hexies flat anyway (at least I do). Just want to stipulate I use the better thread to join.

Coventry, do you remove the basting at all? Do you press well after removing the paper? I am sooo close to starting one of these to use up stash....probably won't make a dent, but at one time I was cutting my stash into either 2" or 2.5" strips....just have to dig out the boxes of them. I made the quilt called Insanity, and used Inklingo to print them on fabric...1/2" pieces! So I'm looking for something to make a little larger. Love your quilt! Looks really crisp, too.

Excellent idea about using thread bought at Estate sales for doing the gathering stitch on the hexi's vs. what I know is good thread. I really like that idea I was going to throw some out but they now have a purpose that goes along with my NO waste policy!

I too printed out the hexies from TexasFreckles and printed them on card stock. I then took an old rotary cutter blade, not too sharp any more, and cut the hexies apart. I did use 2.5 inch fabric for 1 inch hexies and will post a photo when I finish putting them together. I used scrappy fabric, the centers and petals are coordinating fabric, with white around the entire flower. I am putting them together with green in between. I made 5 flowers and that should make a full size quilt. My granddaughter saw one quilt made and she asked who it was for. I said for me and she said she would get the GFG quilt. I told her she would not get that quilt as long as I was breathing!

Hilary, I love your method and your quilt in progress is absolutely gorgeous! Any hints on sewing the hexies together?

Thankyou! I actually use a buttonhole stitch!! I find it creates a sort of hinge and the hexes lay very flat! Hope you can see from the photo! I use a polyester thread as I find it stronger!

Thank you Hilary. I can see it clearly. I'll definitely be sure to try that. On the few hexies I made, I whipped stitched them using cotton thread, this method looks stronger and the hexies lay flatter.

On Quilting Arts episode 1308 called Quilting Simplified, Julia Woods shows how to do hexies from circles-no templates or papers/plastic needed. If I decide to do hexies I am doing it this way. Also due to weight I would think batting would not be needed unless you want a VERY warm quilt. She also has a book that shows this method. It is easy enough if you watch the show that the book probably wouldn't be needed unless you need more instructions or the patterns.

I also saw that episode and tried it! Very easy, and you have circles for yo-yo's too!

I just sew the six sides and do not turn under any extra .. slow but comes out great.. good luck

Hilary, This is such a beautiful quilt. Thanks for sharing the picture and all your tips. I have been using freezer paper to do my hexies. I put the fabric face down, then put the dull side of the hexie on top. I fold over the sides and iron. The waxy side holds the fabric securely. No basting and they come out nice. I do a whip stitch to connect them...but that blanket stitch looks better.

Saw somewhere on YouTube where someone did a ladder stitch to join....I am going to try that.....they laid very smoothly. I don't remember where I saw it, maybe someone else does......
