I don't use spray; don't like the thought of chemicals. I pin baste smaller quilts and thread baste the larger ones. I'm achy all over right now from having spent the last 2 hours on my knees basting a quilt, but it's worth it.

I've pin-basted a full size quilt on the floor and vowed never to do that again. Have you thought about using a couple of long tables pushed together at a church, community room or similar place? To help the time pass quicker, get a couple of friends to help you. The time will fly by.

I agree with SEWDARNBUSY. I spray baste also, usually with the WM brand. No, it doesn't gum up the needle.

Yes, spraying is smelly and messy if you don't do it correctly, but I will use anything that is fast and gets the job done in half the time! I use only the least amount of spray so I don't get it on the floor. It does wash out after the first washing when I finish quilting. I learned to pin baste my first quilt, which was a queen-sized yellow brick road. What a pain!!!! Never again. :hunf:

I use the cheapest spray from the cheap dollar shop. It costs about $5 whilst the quilt shop ones are $30. I have never had a problem with it yellowing etc. I usually wait 24 hours after I have basted the quilt before I start sewing - just to make sure everything is bonded and not sticky. There has been no trouble when quilting.

I LOVE spray basting. Would not baste any other way. Use June Tayler purchased at Jo-ann's with coupons. Have never had it gum up my needles. Have NO problems with slipping or the back puckering or pleating. Spray is WONDERFUL. My motto....Better quilting with cheimicals! Back to you.

If I'm going to quilt on the DSM I use safety pins. On the longarm I like to baste with water soluble thread to keep the quilt squared off.

I usually always pin baste.

I have been spray basting for about a year now, and prefer it over all other methods. I buy June Tailor w/ a coupon at Joann's (but did get to stock up last year when notions were 1/2 off and there was an additional 20% off entire purchase coupon -- I bought all 11 cans I could find in the store). Once basted, I let the quilt sit overnight to 'dry' and have never had problems w/ the needle getting gummed up.
