I sew, have made my own clothes since I was about 10. Of course now I wear jeans and sweatshirts, so I don't make my own clothes any more. But I have made several wedding gowns, which I also designed. I have made flower girl and bridesmaid dresses. I also do a lot of home dec sewing. With the prices of clothes in Marshalls, etc. it just doesn't make sense to sew apparel any more. I made all my kids clothes, and my grandkids layettes too.

dewie45 02-19-2011 04:26 AM

I have done clothing construction since I was 12 or 13. I made my wedding dress, (it was the 60's so it was pretty simple) and a lot of clothes for my girls. The last dresses I made were for my granddaughters but they have reached the age of jeans and tee shirts.

I also made dust ruffles for a designer for a while.

The poor quality of the patterns has been discouraging the past few years.

My job now seems to be teaching my 10 year old granddaughter to sew. She is interested in fashion design...for the moment.;)

I also sew, sew. Right now I am making a "Kate Smith" dress for my GD who is going to sing God Bless America in a 1940 show. I also love making doll clothes. I do some sewing for me, mostly t shirts and pjs.

Tussymussy 02-19-2011 04:28 AM

I started sewing when I was about 5. Since then I have done needlepoint, embroidery by hand and machine, cross stiitch, made my own clothes, took courses and was a professional dressmaker and then found quilting.

I enjoyed this so much, that I took classes to qualify as a teacher and now teach this in a local community centre. Give me a needle, even a knitting one and I will do something with it, and I forgot crochet...... can do that badly too! LOL.

Hello David;
I am a retired clothing designer, I have been sewing all my life. I am now very much into making quilts. I find it relaxing as well as rewarding. It is very much like doing a painting. It was good to see another guy on the board.

Psychomomquilter 02-19-2011 04:57 AM

I also sew many things like pillows, crafts, clothes, etc

anicra 02-19-2011 04:59 AM

I used to sew clothing when my girls were small. I made several bridesmaids gowns years ago and the last article of clothing I made was a prom dress back in 1994. I much prefer quilting!!

dinlauren 02-19-2011 05:23 AM

obie2 02-19-2011 05:33 AM

I sew many things, clothing included.

quiltaroni 02-19-2011 05:39 AM

I sew but very little nowadays mostly nightwear.

MerryQuilter 02-19-2011 05:41 AM

I also used, enjoyed it for my young children, then I made myself a pretty jumper loved the fabric, loved the pattern put it on and hated it. Would have returned it to rack! Stick to quilts now and always happy with results.

rannyof3 02-19-2011 05:46 AM

I'm actually more of a "sewer" than a quilter, which makes me a "fraud" on this board. I sew a lot of flannel PJ's at christmas and fleece outfits more of the time. I don't sew much for myself, but have kids and grand kids to work on.

franc36 02-19-2011 05:51 AM

In high school, I started sewing for myself and my family. Over the years, I have made everything from men's suits to evening gowns. I also did home dec. sewing like sofa covers, draperies, etc. Now I sew only for my granddaughter. I love smocking and heirloom sewing.

2manyprojects 02-19-2011 05:57 AM

I do, make some for me, a lot for grand daughters

lillybeck 02-19-2011 05:59 AM

I have been sewing since I was 14 and have done things like fake fur coats and matching outfits for my kids down to home decor and mending for others. I still sew for my grandbabies on occassion and I love it. Now that I have all the time I need to do it I do not have the money to finance it.lol

lynnsv 02-19-2011 06:03 AM

I sew!! I have 3 daughter and made the majority of their clothes growing up. Just finished another purse and am currently making costumes for a local high school musical. In the past 6 years, 2 daughters were married and I made a total of 12 bridesmaids dresses, flower girl dress and a wedding gown!!

Jeanniebelle 02-19-2011 06:09 AM

I do not know of a sewing board, but I have doing regular sewing for 47 years. I have made clothes for father, sister, neices, husband, a great-neice and now a new baby on the way in August. I find that any kind of sewing is theraputic for me. If I find a sewing board will let you know or you can chat with me on this site any time. Jeanniebelle

Brenda 02-19-2011 06:50 AM

I started sewing in the 7th grade. Made a lot of my clothes
in high school. When my daughter arrived I made all her
clothes untill my machine bit the dust. We were young and
poor. I did not sew again for several years. Boy did I miss it. Now I have my own sewing room an excelent machine
and not enough time. I love making childrens cloths. Eirloom things are a favorite. I did a beautiful christening gown, bonnet, and slip. Love doing doll clothes
and now quilts. All I need now is MORE TIME. Brenda from

I used to sew my boys clothes when they were younger. But I was very fearful of zippers. They ended up wearing cotton sports type pull on shorts and pants & I used to tell them they were trend setters. They accepted that answer until they were about 6 & 7. Then it was regular zipper shorts & pants. They still tease me about how I "manipulated them".

QUILTHER 02-19-2011 06:57 AM

I used to make all my kids clothes till they got to middle school and made most of mine. Now I am dipping back into it. I can't find shirts I like and don't know if I will get back into pants or not. I also like to make vests and jackets/coats.

Linda1 02-19-2011 06:57 AM

I use to sew every thing I wore and a lot of what my boys wore but now it is just quilts.

Butterflyblue 02-19-2011 07:00 AM

I started out sewing just clothes - I remember telling my sister, who is into quilting but doesn't have the time anymore, that sewing quilts just didn't interest me. Now I quilt more than I sew clothing, but I still like to sew myself and my kids clothes from time to time.

www.patternreview.com has reviews of patterns, sewing machine, etc. by users of the site as well as some very helpful forums.

twogeebs 02-19-2011 07:05 AM

Oh yes, I sew, from curtains to making & covering my couch seat, chairs and lots of pillows. I use to make my own clothes. Love to sew!!!

Oh, David....PLEASE let us know when you do find a good sewing board! I have a 15-year old friend who wants to learn (they don't teach sewing in school any more), such a loss!

My hubby wears Hawaiian shirts almost exclusively. He likes the front and the pockets to match, and since those shirts tend to be a little spendy, I make them for him. Plus...he likes the Alexander Henry girls... LOL

Here he is with his mom, sister and brother at Christmas in one of the shirts I made for him. :)

GrandmaLola 02-19-2011 07:13 AM

I used to sew all the time--making clothes that is. I must admit since I started making quilts, I have sort of had "tunnel vision" don't want to do anything else!

Mariposa 02-19-2011 07:18 AM

I sew sew a bit: have done western-type vests, some pajama pants, dolls & their clothes, rice packs for your neck, tote bags, a valance or two, etc. :)

grannypat7925 02-19-2011 07:32 AM

I sewed just about all my girls' clothes when they were growing up, as well as my own. Only sew for the little ones now, but it is fun creating. Difference is, it has to fit whomever it is made for and sometimes that part is difficult.

cuppi duke 02-19-2011 07:34 AM

I have a man friend that makes all his own shirts. Remember tailors were always men in the old days. I think they have a better eye for color.

debbieoh 02-19-2011 07:35 AM

I'm going to be coping my GD 1st Communion Dress. She wants one for her Genric American girl doll. Her birthday is March 10th so going to surprise her with it

I used to make all of my clothing but now sew items for the home and gifts.

mpspeedy 02-19-2011 07:48 AM

I started out garment sewing for myself as I was very mature, figure wise at a young age. My first quilt was made form scraps from the garments I had made for myself before I was 16. I worked for about two years in a Bernina dealer that was also a custom dressmaking and alterations shop. I learned how to work with every kind of fabric and ended up making the junior bridesmaid and two flowergirl dresses for my daughter's wedding as well as alterating the dress she wore as maid of honor in her college roommate's wedding. I also made her prom gown. One of the first things I did for my husband before we were married is mend a lot of his clothes. I still have to alter every pair of pants he purchases. The majority of sewing I do now is craft projects such as bags, pillows etc. Most of my sewing time is devoted to quilts.

momto4 02-19-2011 07:50 AM

I have never tried, but my DH wants me to sew him some cloth chef pants. I am going to ATTEMPT it, but we shall see how it goes. My DD also wants me to make a dress which makes me nervous. I really dont know a thing about making it drape properly and what not. I might give it a shot some day, but I will probably stick to my quilting for the moment.

G'ma Kay 02-19-2011 07:57 AM

I still make my own clothes, prom dresses for the family, bridesmaid dresses and flower girls. I truly enjoy it, and have some very unique family members who have trouble finding things to fit off the rack.

Deara 02-19-2011 08:24 AM

As others have stated, I sew far better than I quilt, but I am learning as I did with sewing many, many years ago.

I too, make my own clothes and hubby just bought me a dress form which I have always wanted.

I also sew crafts and make tote/purses.
The the Bow Tuck pattern being my latest and fast becoming popular with my granddaughters.

I am working on a Sampler quilt for myself right now.
Have two blocks done and planning the color combos for the next one.
I plan on posting my progress as I get a little further along with it.

Blessings,
Sandi

I'm a sew & sew. I run my own sewing business

scraphq 02-19-2011 08:38 AM

I have sewn my whole life, everything from aprons to wedding dresses. Haven't made a garment for several years.would rather make quilts.

caliquocat 02-19-2011 08:52 AM

I've been sewing for over 60 years & still do make my own blouses, robes, etc. I sewed all my daughter's clothes through college plus her wedding dress. My son loved "Moms" special shirts. At one time I made nylon backpack tents & sleeping bags for my Boy Scout son & husband. You name it, I'll try it. I'm on my 5th sewing machine. (2 were gifts)

Let's see, what was the question? :-)

penski 02-19-2011 09:12 AM
