I have seen desks and tables made from the bottoms of sewing machine cabinets for years. So go for it. I would.
Take care. Linda |
I have seen these done with a granite top put on them -- it makes a lovely table for any room.
It seems to me that it would be about the right height to sit next to a regular machine cabinet to help hold the quilt that is being machine quilted. Or, before that, to hold a small pressing board area, or the strips that make the quilt. And that's before you consider all the ideas that have been listed for the rest of the house!
I just purchased a 100 yr old treadle -- I cleaned/repaired it & now the machine runs so smoothly but it needs new leather. I looked for a long time before finding this baby, have another machine now working w/o the stand, so will keep looking for a stand w/o a machine. Nothing about old treadles can possibly be weird! |
No, it is not weird. I have seen them many times used for tables and desks.

My quilting friend took just the legs and had a beveled edge, heavy duty glass top made for it, extra large and she put her regular sewing machine on it. It is a stunner! It gives her LOTS of room, she has the new mixed with the treasured old, and because it is glass, it doesn't overpower the room. Voila!
I think it would be a great idea, bring part of the past into the present.
I had 2, notice the word "had", of these old machines that I wanted to make tables out of until I found out my dh gave them away.
I have actually seen tables made out of these legs. Here in my part of the south we use everything!
I have a friend that bought one and put a granite top on it. She bought the granite very cheap because it was too small for anything else. The owner of the granite site told her he sells lots of smaller pieces cheap. Can't use them so he sells them. She has several pieces she uses in her kitchen as trivets.
Not weird at all, I have the legs myself with plans to do it also. Just haven't hard time, etc to get it done. Go for it!
