beautiful fabric. not sure how to use it either.

SandyMac 04-09-2011 04:50 AM

You know I was kind of thinking a jacket would look nice or a sun dress.

melodyr 04-09-2011 04:52 AM

Beautiful fabric! Maybe an Attic Windows?

Phyl 04-09-2011 04:55 AM

The roses are gorgeous! I would think though that since she picked out THAT fabric, it should really take center stage with the quilt. The simpler, the better. What about the simple stripes of that fabric, rather wide, and thinner strips of coordinating black and green? If you want to get fussy, bind the outside with black and green stripes and put small HST between the border stripes or...really wacky...OBWs between the outside stripes. Hmmmmmmmmmmm...I can see it now..............gorgeous!

Phyl 04-09-2011 04:58 AM

I just read some of the other answers and look how many of us mentioned stack and whack!!! I think it has a multifaceted look and stack and whack would be fabulous!

Scakes 04-09-2011 05:16 AM

Beautiful fabric! Almost too pretty to cut. Be sure to post a photo after you make the quilt. I bet it will be gorgeous.

I didn't expect her to choose this fabric as the feature so I'm coming up short on ideas.

Looking for suggestions, please!

Hi i have the answer(well maybe not) first how old is your daughter, (is it for a small child or older child, what are her likes)
1) you could base it on the song "the rose" that Bette Midler sang, if you hear the song or get the words, its about love, roses coming up thru the snow, cut out indivdual roses , have them look like their comimg up thru the snow.

better yet(this fun i dont have to make it but i could) all black background with lots of individual roses, and just a general shape of cuts with wide bright eyes peering thru the roses. they could be looking at the pretty butterflies you will(ofcourse hand sew  ) also the music notes are good they could be over the cats, like the were whiseling  what do you think.
we could all go to your fabric store and help you

slide show pattern ~ that one showcases large prints very well and is simplistic and stylish :)

I agree with Warm Wishes, its a beautiful fabric

Somerset Val 04-09-2011 07:04 AM

It's gorgeous! It would be a pity to cut it up into small pieces. I would use it as a wide border, to show off the design, and select co-ordinating colours to go with it - proberbly looking at the dots on the selvedge in order to choose sympathetic colours.

Favorite Fabrics 04-09-2011 07:06 AM

I do know that I will use it as a wide border (that was the EASY part of the decision)... and I just ordered some of the all-over red roses that QKO has for a narrower inner border. Hope he has some left! After posting it here, well... it's likely to disappear quickly! :)

Still haven't decided on what to do with the rest of it.

BTW, daughter is nearly 14 and has rather sophisticated tastes. Nothing pink and girly for her. When she was in kindergarten she informed me that her favorite color was black. Guess she is being consistent, right?

gmcsewer 04-09-2011 08:35 AM

I did one several years ago using the flowers as a center and making log cabin blocks using black and white or cream prints and red small flowered print and green of the leaves and could even use a yellow. 12 blocks and made a square of the blocks with a hole in the middle and filled it with plain log cabin blocks of he same fabric but wider strips. It looked ood and the DS and DIL use it as a cover for their bed.

A great collection----would make a lovely quilt using your daughter's choice. Also, I think I've found the collection that I want for the Bella Bella quilt I plan to make for my granddaugters wedding quilt. A nice variety.

Gizzy-Girl 04-09-2011 09:55 AM

I too think that Warm Wishes is the better choice for showing off your main rose fabric. I can hardly wait to see the finished quilt. Enjoy.

Paper piece a block like square in a square, where the first center piece is the full bloom of the rose. See the pattern below and picture the boom in the center. You could make it any size.

GramaLaura 04-09-2011 10:41 AM

If it is for the sweet little girl in the photo? How about the pattern "Love That Print" www.GrizzlyGulchGallery.com It is a design of Ann Lauer. Now you have lots of ideas....keep us posted :D

LindaaJR 04-09-2011 10:57 AM

I love the fabric. Maybe a couple greens could be use in the quilt too? I am new to quilting, so not good at suggesting color combinations. As for dark colored cats sleeping on it, I have found that dark cats sleep on light colored things and light colored cats sleep on dark colored things. I swear mine walk in a room and look around to see which color is opposite their color.

marys 04-09-2011 11:59 AM

How about using Elenaor Burns pattern - Country Lanes. It's in the book "Quilting Through the Seasons". I've made several of these and with this fabric you could use a black backgroud with red and green - right shades of course - for the other colors. It would be so pretty. Matter of fact I think I have this same fabric and I just might give it a try.

Here is a picture of a quilt that I made using the E Burns quilt that I had mentioned a few minutes ago. This is my first picture to post so we'll see how it goes.

This is beautiful. My dream is to make a quilt for each of my great granddaughters that are named after flowers, Daisy, Roselee, Lily and Holly. This is what I have in mind of what I would like them to look like.

This is one of my favorites when I have a fabric so lovely it shouldn't be cut into small pieces.

galvestonangel 04-09-2011 12:31 PM

You have a lot of good suggestions already. But wanted to add I love the idea of using the black and white musical notes with it. Music and roses just go together.

theifner 04-09-2011 12:50 PM

I love the fabric I love red roses

theifner 04-09-2011 12:52 PM

You could do a basket and place the roses in it appliques the roses and making different blocks I know this would probably waste alot of fabric but you could use the rest for scrap quilts or for a border on the quilt

marys 04-09-2011 01:09 PM

Glad you like it too. It is probably my favorite pattern. I've made "at least" 7 or 8 King size ones and I have no idea how many of the throws. I've made 2 full bed size ones just this past week. For some reason I never get tired of making this pattern. They are all so very different - depending on the main fabric.

Teddybear Lady 04-09-2011 01:10 PM

ooh pretty!!!

RobertaMarie 04-09-2011 01:30 PM

That is such beautiful fabric, anythihng would be lovely. Be sure to post a photo when you are done. I can hardly wait to see it.
Several suggestions so far are really nice.

Sandra in Minnesota 04-09-2011 02:44 PM

Big Red 04-09-2011 02:46 PM

I also think the BQ2 would look great.

quilter1962 04-09-2011 02:51 PM

How about a Stack & Wack? I have seen similar fabrics used that are bold florals & they always come out looking great :)

Love the fabric and I'm not sure what block I would make but I know I would stick to the same reds, greens and black as this fabric.. It would be awesome.

I was going to suggest BQ also. Great pattern for large prints you wish to highlight.

Sallysue48 04-09-2011 04:59 PM

How about a kalidascope Quilt or Wack and Stack?

Nettie Phillips 04-09-2011 05:15 PM

MerryQuilter 04-09-2011 05:32 PM
