This whole "work" thing is getting in the way of my sewing! You get a job and they expect you to come back EVERYDAY! Hello.....I have quilting on my mind I can't be productive in the finance department. 6 years of college and all I can think about at work is pretty fabrics........so sad

amma 12-09-2009 04:04 PM

Even being retired...life gets in the way of my quilting time too!!! In a perfect world we would get to quilt whenever we wanted :D:D:D

CrystalKicks 12-09-2009 04:04 PM

I like it...

NorBanaquilts 12-09-2009 04:04 PM

You aren't alone, I'm an accounting manager that spends the whole day waiting to go home so I can play with my fabric.

Joanieu 12-09-2009 04:10 PM

I work at home and prepare/review loan documents for mortgage companies and right now it is real slow so I can quilt or read the board upstairs in my office while I am waiting for some work to come in. Otherwise I think I would go crazy working at a regular office and not be able to keep my hands busy. :)

marsye 12-09-2009 04:41 PM

LMAO!!!! I became self employed in 1990 so I could stay home and play (work) in my jammers.

Deb watkins 12-09-2009 05:03 PM

We had a snow day today! Finished up my Chocolate Raspberry blocks and now starting the Louisiana set!

Jim's Gem 12-09-2009 05:24 PM

I agree. Work just gets in the way of quilting time. I am off on disability currently. I wish I did not have to go back in January!

RedGarnet222 12-09-2009 05:49 PM

I agree with amma ... Life gets in the way of my sewing and quilting all the time.

kat112000 12-09-2009 07:37 PM

When we bought our business two years ago I thought, right on I can do the bookwork for half the day and then quilt the rest of the day. That has not happened yet!!!

Missi 12-09-2009 07:40 PM

I just said yesterday that work sure does get in the way of my quilting :)

Mamaskeeto 12-09-2009 07:43 PM

Work sure does get in the way. I have a few friends that rotary cut fabric on their lunch hour. I've never done that before, I'd probally get food all over my fabric. LOL

Eddie 12-09-2009 07:45 PM

Oh, goodness....it's catching! LOL :D I wonder when will be the first time I'm "sick" from work so I can stay home and quilt.

Pam G 12-09-2009 07:47 PM

Yes, work does get in the way ... but it does help us to buy more fabric right?? More income = more fabric, works for me :) he he

amma 12-09-2009 07:51 PM

Can you call in with a case of Quilt-itis???? If you say it really, really fast, the boss might think it is a new virus going around

nursie76 12-09-2009 07:54 PM

You have lots of company!!!! I was just thinking today how I spend all day reminding myself that if I didn't have my job I couldn't support my habit!!!!!! (I really do love my job, but quilting is my addiction!)

littlehud 12-09-2009 07:56 PM

I spend my time at work thinking of sewing. I had the last two days off and DGD didn't have school because of the snow. Very little sewing for me. :-( :-( :-( I'm so sad.

Leota 12-09-2009 07:58 PM

LOL...I thought I was depressed because my house isn't as ready for company as I want...nope...I've got Quiltitis :D

Lostn51 12-10-2009 05:14 AM

Like someone stated earlier life gets in the way for me, I am retired also and I am lucky to get out to the studio once a week.

Ninnie 12-10-2009 05:29 AM

We owned a convenience store for years. i finally set up my machine on a back counter, and my quilting frame out on the main floor> LOL

Panther Creek Quilting 12-10-2009 05:39 AM

Talking about work taking up all your time. Maybe you all could quit your jobs and piece tops for your income. Kill two birds with one stone, LOL.

rannyof3 12-10-2009 05:48 AM

PLEASE don't complain... LOL...
I wish I had a job. Been taking courses on line and THAT is standing in the way of my sewing.....
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU OUR THERE...

Kimcatlou 12-10-2009 05:52 AM

I'm retired, but friends and family seem to think I am a sewing robot and keep flooding me with sewing/mending that "won't take much time." My piles of UFO's and quilt patterns I want to try keep crying out to me.
I wish I could learn to say "No!" to these requests.

montanaquilter 12-10-2009 05:56 AM

hey that's a good one amma!!! i work at home too but as usual i still have to do it and not get much quilting done during the day--darn it!! why can't we all just quilt all day????!!!!

sally2c 12-10-2009 06:09 AM

I've given up trying to hand quilt and sew by machine in the sewing/2-siamese-cats room. When I do need to do hand work, sitting in my recliner, my 2-yr-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi sits on the floor staring at me and whining for me to get on the floor with him and play. He has even groaned when I come into the living room with a quilt as he knows that he's forbidden to share my lap with a quilt!

Quilt4u 12-10-2009 06:23 AM

Same here.

Piedmont Quilter 12-10-2009 06:26 AM

No it's not just you. I went back to work 11/10 and I haven't sat down in front of the sewing machine since. Not a lot going on at work right now ~~ wish I could bring my machine to work!!!

krabadan 12-10-2009 06:28 AM

Believe me, I know what you mean. And now, in addition to work, there's Christmas coming up!

topper1 12-10-2009 07:03 AM

I have caught the virus also. I was out in Chicago at cancer center with my sister and we talked about quilting every day, so dont worry be happy. betty

Maribeth 12-10-2009 07:20 AM

I know what you mean. I spent 12 years completing my 2 B.A.s while working full-time and sometimes holding a part-time job as well. So, I finally have my degree and now, I don't really care to work in my field. I have been trying to learn hand applique during lunch hours and I spend down time reading here and searching the web for the next quilt plan.

omak 12-10-2009 07:23 AM

So, I stopped in at a local shop Tuesday - - Chain Stitchery, a business that does embroidery for letterman jackets, etc.
I took one look at the counter and listened to the owner talking on the phone before getting a chance to check on the order I went in to see.
My order wasn't ready, no big deal, but another phone call came in and I told her "I want to talk to you when you get done with that call."
The scariest words to my friends - - I want to talk <g>
anyway, I told her that when she got done with the Christmas rush, it might be a good idea for her to have me come in and be trained to help her ...
"Do you sew?"
well, as a matter of fact <g> and, I think I just talked myself into a job!
If I learn nothing more than how to use an embroidery machine and help a friend get through holiday rushes ... it will be a good thing.

Keep working. The fabric stores rely on you.

That's what I'm talkin' about!

I want to be able to quilt when the mood strikes and if it happens to be at work (or before I even go), then I should be able to just get to it and do the work thing as sporadically as I'm currently quilting.

She will be lucky to have you Omak. Have her open a shop where I live and I'll work for her too.

cbuchanan 12-10-2009 07:44 AM

Amma: This has nothing to do with this post. BUT... I keep seeing your name and am amused. My grandkids call me
Am'ma: first grandchild couldn't say "grandma" and it ended up "Am'ma" and I've never heard it used anywhere but here. Is this your name or a nickname...where did it come from?

You and I are going to have to talk! LOL
We still have those jeans to work on ... but, let's do Christmas first, eh? <g>

maggiesquilt 12-10-2009 11:32 AM

I wonder somedays when I am sitting at this desk in the office. Maybe I should just quit today, and go home and just play with my fabrics. :-P That would be so totally awesome to be able to afford it. Dreaming of quilting again

omak 12-10-2009 12:18 PM

Just a thought.
When I didn't have any demands on me, it was pretty amazing the things I couldn't find to do.
Housekeeping is not the main drive in my system, but when I had to take time from playing to nurse the baby ... I could see a TON of things that had to be done.
As long as I had to sit down and look at it, because I couldn't actually do it, I spent all my time with baby thinking of all the things I COULD be doing.
But, once baby was fed, dry, and happy ... I never did any of those things ... well, I did some of them, but for the most part, the only time I wanted to do certain things was when I couldn't do them.
It is the same with anything we want to do ... when we have the time, we dink around doing all sorts of things that have nothing to do with what we thought we would do if "we could just go home" ...
it must be a human thing ... but, we cattle people see it in the pasture - - the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, until you get to the other side of the fence, and then that silly cow figures out ... "Hey! I want over there!"
Hang in there, quilters! You will have time ... the ticket is to enjoy your moments leading toward your goal - - since none of our projects will get done if we aren't employed, eh?
