A friend of mine has asked me to sew 4 quilts. Her daughter is getting married this coming Christmas and she wants to give her brides mades quilts for being in the wedding. She is dropping off the pattern, 5 full bolts of fabric, thread, batting and bias tape and I get what is left over. The quilts are standard size. On top of that she is paying me $550.00 per quilt. If I have time left she wants me to make a 8ft table runner for the main table.

Sounds like a lot of work. Also lots of fun, scraps, and some money to boot. Good luck.

isnthatodd 02-23-2011 11:02 AM

Start early!!!

Jim's Gem 02-23-2011 11:02 AM

Wow!!! That's really really nice Bridsmaid's gifts!!!!
Hopefully it is a pattern and fabrics that you like working with!!!

Rebecca VLQ 02-23-2011 11:03 AM

What a gem to give you that much time to get them all done! I would say set up a payment schedule just so no one is surprised at the end!

(and the friendship stays golden!)

hperttula123 02-23-2011 11:04 AM

That is wonderful!!! :)

Raggiemom 02-23-2011 11:17 AM

Good for you! Enjoy making them.

trupeach1 02-23-2011 11:27 AM

can't wait to see them.

LucyInTheSky 02-23-2011 11:28 AM

At least she's paying. When I first read the title, I was worried it was goign to be another of those "make me 5 quilts... wait, you want me to pay for supplies and your time??" posts. For my wedding, I have 2 friends who are singing my 1st dance song. I'm making them each a quilt :D

dixiebelle162002 02-23-2011 11:31 AM

Wonderful! sounds like you have a lot to keep you busy.

emsgranny 02-23-2011 11:33 AM

Yoy should be very honored!! And thankful - that she didnt expect you to supply fabric etc. and to get paid to do it is even better!!! Watch out though it could be a start of a new business for you lol Many who see the quilts may like the idea for their wedding parties also...If approached I would make a set amount and base it on what time etc you have invested in the ones you are doing now. Good luck and would love to se one thanks cheryl :-D

sueisallaboutquilts 02-23-2011 11:38 AM

Wow, that is awesome!! Finally, someone is being reasonable with the price of a beautiful quilt :D:D
Be sure to post pics!

My friend is well to do and I won't have to worry about her not paying for them. 3 years ago she asked me to do the silk flowers for her son's wedding and got paid very well. I sure wish I had her life.

jajudd24 02-23-2011 01:39 PM

sewmuchmore 02-23-2011 02:35 PM

Sounds like a ball! Go for it! But pick a pattern that is relatively easy to do, but looks like a million. Edie

quilter68 02-24-2011 04:08 AM

Start with the table runner and don't stop 'till they are all done. This bride is a smart consumer and is willing to pay for it.
Good Luck and many sunny, sewing days to you.

Is a time line of one quilt per month too fast?

Calzo 02-24-2011 04:40 AM

Wow - sounds like she appreciates what is involved in making a quilt and is willing to pay a fair price. Better get going. Christmas will be here before you know it. And don't forget to post pictures when you've finished.

Excellent. These should be a JOY to work on! :D

janiesews 02-24-2011 05:05 AM

WOW-I've never heard of such a wonderful gift for a bridemaid-and so nice to hear you will be paid for your skill. That is great.

Renee110 02-24-2011 05:11 AM

It sounds like she is paying a good rate, and she bought the fabric, pattern etc.... I bet you have a great time! I love having a deadline....as opposed to just doing what I want. I get more done! Congratulation on your "job"!

eiltcoq 02-24-2011 05:18 AM

Deborah, It would be fun to see the pattern she picked out. It sounds, as though, you'll be busy for the whole year. Enjoy your time making these quilts. Do you do your own quilting, also? Do you have a LA? Please show us your progress as you make these quilts. Thanks. Eiltcoq.

1barron 02-24-2011 05:18 AM

Good Luck. Keep us posted on how you are doing. That many quilts can be overwhelming. The money sure sounds good though.

CarrieAnne 02-24-2011 05:24 AM

Thats AWESOME!

pkary 02-24-2011 05:26 AM

Good for you! Glad she gave you some time to do the work. Shows she likes your work and gave some thought to the assignment. Let us know your progress!

DirtyPaw 02-24-2011 05:38 AM

You are going to be busy. The money sure sounds nice.

grammy Dwynn 02-24-2011 05:49 AM

I too have been roped into doing wedding sewing!!! My date is the end of April. Table runners, flower girl dress, fairy flower girls outfit alterations. So much to do, so little time and I'm not getting paid the $$ . . . . Oh yea, I'm the mother of the bride. ;)

Cris 02-24-2011 05:51 AM

Get cracking!

Arleners 02-24-2011 06:07 AM

If you keep to a schedule, 4 quilts by Christmas should be doable. Good luck! Keep us posted on your progress.

mdollar 02-24-2011 06:45 AM

Wow, that's some expensive bride's maids gifts! You better start early! You've got a lot of work to do! lol

grannypat7925 02-24-2011 06:47 AM

WOW! You are going to be one busy lady!

grandma anna 02-24-2011 06:50 AM

Good luck

Holice 02-24-2011 07:28 AM

do you have all the details in writing or at least notes as to what is expected and when. even friends need this.

wvhill22 02-24-2011 07:34 AM

wow that is something. keep us posted if you do it. i want to see the finished quilts

mhansen6 02-24-2011 07:40 AM

Are you happy with this situation? It sounds like a lot of work, but she is also paying you well. She obviously knows the worth of a quilt and all the time it takes. Please show us pictures when you are finished.
