but I was cleaning up my sewing area and leaned my 15 inch omnigrid ruler against the back of the chair. I ironed my blocks, went back to my machine and sat down to sew...... CRACK! I can't believe I broke my ruler. I have it taped together for now but I will be shopping for a new one, I guess. Don't you hate it when you do stupid things.

wolph33 05-14-2011 07:20 PM

sure do.we are all human and mess up sometimes.

QuiltE 05-14-2011 07:22 PM

Oh dear ... What a way to ruin a Saturday night!!

Make Lemonade out of those Lemons! .... Keep the pieces and take them to a glass shop. They can trim them down into smaller rulers/squares for you.

jdiane318 05-14-2011 07:24 PM

You can also go to Lowe's and buy the acrylic glue and put it back together.

Murphy 05-14-2011 07:26 PM

Argh!!!

GreatStarter 05-14-2011 07:43 PM

Oh, don't beat yourself up over it. We all do things like that sometimes. Just think you will be getting a brand new one and you won't set it in your chair anymore. I am glad you didn't get hurt on the broken pieces.
Kat

Tartan 05-14-2011 07:54 PM

Thanks everyone! I'll try to glue it on Monday and if that doesn't work, I'll see about cutting it down. I don't feel so bad after reading all your great ideas!

sherriequilts 05-14-2011 08:00 PM

At least you know where it is and what happened to it. I used my slotted June Taylor ruler to cut all the strips for a log cabin quilt. Dear little ruler has been hiding from me ever since and that was in October. I don't know what I did to make it do that! Of course, if I buy (adopt!) another one, the first one will miraculously appear, probably in the middle of my bed, or bop me on the head, or . . . well, you know what I mean!

AngieS 05-14-2011 08:01 PM

That's terrible but it sounds just like me..... :(

craftybear 05-14-2011 08:32 PM

sorry, that will give you an excuse to go to quilt shop and buy you another one and you will find more goodies to buy

sueisallaboutquilts 05-14-2011 09:07 PM

I'm used to doing dumb things LOL :D:D

wolfkitty 05-14-2011 10:49 PM

That sounds like something I would do. Glad you have ideas to deal with the situation! :)

montanajan 05-14-2011 11:00 PM

I'd cut it down, use a Joann's coupon & go buy or order on line a new one:+)

Marion T 05-14-2011 11:29 PM

I thought my ruler was unbreakable, then my husband dropped it and then trod on it. We found out it's not unbreakable!! Oh well, at least you know you are not alone.

If it broke on an even line, save it and use it as a smaller ruler. My 24" ruler broke in half, on a perfectly even line, and now I have two smaller rulers, which I use often.

Yooper32 05-15-2011 03:20 AM

Please promise that you will never set your iron down on your chair. Grins!

LoriEl 05-15-2011 03:23 AM

I did almost the same thing just three days ago. Leaned a long ruler on the wall, it fell over and as I was walking heard that same crack you heard. Luckily I have two other long ones and have been using the two shorter pieces.

justlooking 05-15-2011 03:41 AM

We all do those kind of things!

alapetitechaise 05-15-2011 03:42 AM

I read a great idea on this site a few weeks ago that might have helped avoid this situation. A reader wrote that she had holes placed on the end of all her rulers and hung them on a hook on the wall. Great idea to avoid breakage and misplacing the small ones.

wishfulthinking 05-15-2011 04:33 AM

I keep tossing mine onto the floor, all the time saying, "Now you know you're liable to step on that!" Guess I won't stop till I do.

Mary Bird 05-15-2011 04:34 AM

I had mine cut down to use as bag bottoms. Saved myself $$ - those Bag-E-Bottoms are expensive! Besides, the ruler corners were getting a bit rounded...

Moon Holiday 05-15-2011 04:56 AM

Oh, I can sympathize. About 4 years ago when I was cleaning and organizing my sewing room I wanted to put my Janome in its case so I could move furniture around. I picked up the clear acrylic extension and realized I couldn't set it down on my tables because they were piled high with large bags of unsorted fabrics, so I set the extension on the floor under the edge of my ironing board figuring that way I couldn't step on it. Then after I put the Janome in its case I turned to put it next to my other machines and lost my balance... you guessed it... Janome and I knocked the ironing board over, the iron fell and machine and I landed on the acrylic extension and split it in half. Of course the extension was a Christmas gift and I only had it for a couple of months.....
To say the least, I was not a very happy camper!

dinlauren 05-15-2011 05:36 AM

I had mine on the floor (carpet) and leaned on it to get up..............duh.....it broke too. I had a back up though so i only use it when i'm cutting smaller pieces. It worked out fine.

fayzer 05-15-2011 05:44 AM

I put a nail in my closet and hang my rulers every time I finish using them because I would be the very one to sit on it too.

Annaquilts 05-15-2011 05:45 AM

I am sorry but this made me laugh. Boy can I relate.

cheryl222 05-15-2011 05:50 AM

I broke my June Tailor shape cut and was so sad, but I used an acrylic glue to get it back together. I made sure it was flat and put thin plastic (as in a baggie) and laid the glued part on that as well as a piece on top and it has held for at least 2 years. Much cheaper than a new ruler!

Tudey 05-15-2011 06:09 AM

Moral of the story: Don't clean up the sewing room?

juliea9967 05-15-2011 06:15 AM

Oh! You just can't help but beat yourself up when you do things like that. I keep telling myself it doesn't help any to do it, but I still do it.

Yea, my favorite ruler doubles as a guide for my decorative painting (im a painter ) and I also use it for installing new knobs and pulls on cabinets. Well, I obviously left it at one of my customers' houses and I can't figure out which one.

Eloise 05-15-2011 07:20 AM

You must have been at my house! I did that a few years ago and it was horrible! Again, we are only human and as quilters we can laugh at ourselves more easily!

clem55 05-15-2011 07:33 AM

Didn't sit on as ruler, but you all know those wicker trunks that you can use like a coffere table? Had one of those years ago, had a 1/4 piece of glass cut to fit on top, heavy glass. Well, dumb me backed up to it and sat down.Yep!! Darn thing broke right in half! I didn't realize the trunk lid didn't have flat even, supported base. But then, I always seem to to dumb things like that, so I'm use to it!!

Eloise 05-15-2011 07:49 AM

We are amazing huh? Oh well, we learn and then we laugh. thank goodness you were not hurt! Happy Quilting!

patchsamkim 05-15-2011 07:57 AM

That happened to me before too...my 6x24 ruler....broke just about exactly in half...used each half for a long time...but also did buy a new one...which I do still have after many years...so it was worth it to buy a new one.

Don't you just hate it when you're trying to do good (cleaning) and you do something bad. I can so relate!

A glass shop can cut it down for you .... you could do the largest pieces possible ... or make an assortment of sizes that could be usable.

I hate it when that happens. My sewing machine is new so i'm still learning about it. A few weeks ago I needed to use the manuel to check on a stich setting and it was gone. I know where I had put it, but it was gone. I swear I searched room from top to bottom. Nothing. A few days later I was over looking for somthing else and happend to notice something down behind the dog crate, it was my book. Somehow it had fallen off the shelf and landed there. I was really glad to find it.

Don't forget your coupons and head to Joann's or Michaels. You can get them online as well. Hey we've all done something like that.

Kayaker26 05-15-2011 01:49 PM

I've done that and since I cried my DH said I could get that and anything else I wanted. He is the best!

quiltedgarden 05-15-2011 08:05 PM

I also am a member of that "oh no" class this week. Went to a sew-in and left my cutting mat in my car, on edge behind the driver's seat. I was there about 3 hours and didn't take it out of the car because there were mats provided. Well....I am sick. My cutting mat...24x36 is now warped. Any ideas for restoring. Ironing? or leaving it in the sun lying flat? or? Help. Any ideas appreciated.
