That is what I would do....add a border to it...

My theory is, when someone is so close to the back of a quilt that they will be able to see through the quilting design that there was an extra strip added on to one side, they won't notice because their eyes will be closed because they are sleeping!

I have done that before too. Good thing is that you will remember next time.

Boy can I relate to this. I just add what I need and pretend it was suppossed to be that way. lol

My avatar is actually the back of a comfort quilt I made. I had planned to do the back all in one fabric, but didn't buy the backing fabric at the same time I bought the fabric to piece the top. When I completed the top, I didn't want to stop working on the quilt until I could shop for the backing fabric and started piecing together leftovers from the top and added some fabrics from my stash. I ended up liking the pieced back as much as the top.

You could be very creative with what you do and put a strip at the top and bottom, or do the frame of the whole back like someone suggested. Piecing the back sure adds a lot of interest.

I took some of your suggestions, and since I had a rather large strip left over that was already sewn together, I split the backing in half, inserted the strip across the middle, and voila - instant length :)

I was planning on quilting it on my machine, but I gave up because I simply couldn't get this massive thing pinned right, so I'm going to wait until my friend is finished with the king quilt she currently has on her long-arm and use that instead. Since I'm not doing a fancy design, it shouldn't take more than a day or so to finish using her machine. She's such a gem to allow me to use her machine - I just have to provide my own thread - she provides the machine and her expertise, along with great company. I'll definitely bring lunch when I go though :)

Any of the suggested ideas will work fine. Like my yoga teacher always says...No worries!

Next to no one looks at the back...not to worry and like others said once it is quilted...next to no one will notice or care....I piece backings all the time to make them fit.
