I went with a wood grain kind of thing...

Here is what I have so far.
The first layer of gray is about the same color as the fabric, The second color of gray around the dragon is lighter. I will use a darker gray to give the frame more depth, in the knot holes and add to the shading perspective. Ray.. |
What a beautiful piece of artwork!!! I love your "no fear" approach to this quilt :D:D:D You have done an awesome job on it, the quilting is perfect!!! How will you shade the woodgrains?
Glad your remembered the specs 8-) |
I wish I could come watch you work.

Here is the last layer of the dragon's frame. Insted of a darker gray, I went all out. Wild and crazy guy I am.
I used a rainbow varigated thread, I just hade to put in some color into it... Just like me. I kind of tattooed the quilt It had to happen... Old tattoo artist don't die. they just start to quilt. I mean a needle, colors, and a up-n-down machine |
I pronounce it AMAZING!

One more step forward with the dragon.
I had a hard time moving the whole thing around AND thru the opening of the machine. That's quite alot of material to shove into that small opening, and still hold it down to sew. A few more pictures for all of my adoring fans to enjoy... Ray.. quilted out thru the black, white, and red 1 inch lines Kept the cornors flowing around quilted accross the piano key panel with mono line, split the pieces in half to double the look |

Wow. Just...wow. Holy Geez, this quilt is awesome! I am so hugely impressed! And to think this gorgeous piece of art is going to cover a chair??? Ok, so it's a great chair...but still!
Um...did I mention I love dragons...and I promise I will take good care of it... Keep it up! You are doing a marvelous job! I can't WAIT to see what you do with the Koi! (I have several pieces of koi fabric myself for which I had grand plans for...) |
I followed your progress in wonder and amazement. My goodness, such a creative mind! I just wasn't born with that talent. I have to see it to visualize it. With each step I couldn't imagine your quilt getting any better because it was so awesome at that step. Then you just kept going and going and going. !!!!!!!!! I loved the stitching you did on the dragon. Then you jumped right into the symbols and thennnnnnnnnn came the branches with flowers. Oh,,,,,,,,,my,,,,,,,,,goodness. !!!!!!!!!!!!
Your work is marvelous and I have really enjoyed your sharing it with us at each step. |
Growing old is mandatory,
Growing up is optional !!! I have that on a shirt and wear it proudly. |
I would make a large square out of the dragon fabric with the dragon and clouds around it then with the red fabric make a boarder about 2-4 in thick and then do a boarder in black the same size or maybe 1 in bigger then do another in white or gray then the last fabric. then depending on how big you want to make it you can do some squares of the dragon in the four corners and do another frame connecting the squares. but that is just me. It is like making a picture frame out of the solids and you are framing the dragon fabric. Whatever you make is going to look fab. I love the fabric and my GMIL would absolutely love the fabric.

Just wanted to say you inspired me to try trapunto on my mom's MD present. Have all the trapunto done, wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, now all i have to do is quilt it. Well, I'm off to quilt it.

When I walked by this quilt at our guild show this weekend, I said, "Hello! I know you!" - this quilter has used the same material in her quilt here.
Enjoy :) Linda Quilt from guild show with same dragons |
I LOVE your quilt, very Ed Hardy-ish, very very cool!
|
onw type pattern I have used with that type of fabric is use1/2 yard or more in the very center to show off the dragon fabric.
Then take you red and black and make a row of four patches top and bottom of the dragon. then a stip again of the dragon. then more 4 patches. It mske a really cool looking guit and it shows off the focus fabric. if you want more infortmation you can pm me. |
I'm sorry I didn't see all the messages in between page one and 10 I guess I sleep through all that. It all loos great

Here is an update on the dragon quilt.
I started to sew the larger panels, I am trying to get a (rock into a still pond) ripple affect with the symbol squares have one side done, here they are. |
You are doing an amazing job. I love ALL the stitching. I don't have patience for that, so it's great to watch what you turn out....

Thank you BK. I love all of the support. and to all that is guiding me along the way. I wondered why anybody would make the small size quilts... NOW I see. This thing has grown into a monster. Well it is a dragon, right? For my first endever I really bit off a big piece. But I am taking it step by step...
Ray.. I could not stop at just the two printed panels I still wanted the ripple effect to continue out to the white frame I am thinking the white frame should look like the gray frame( wood grain) in white thread. |

Well, the quilt is coming along.................and the man is minus some facial hair ;)
|
I love the fabric and the colors. I know that anything you do with it will be stunning.
|
I made a little pice of plexiglass( like fons porter HST guide All it is is a thin piece of plastic 1/2 inch wide w/ a line scribbed down the middle lengthwise. It's put from one cornor to the other, make a line on each side , sew on the lines then cut down the center of the stiching to make two HTS)
OK back to the stitches. I used that 1/2 inch to mark all of the lines to know where the turned the corners. The threads match on the black,& red. to blend into the piece a little as it goes out to the side. I can show you where I do have 1 thread row that didn't come out just right. HA! HA!. I am still new to this FMQ kind of thing, and I use a little singer to do all of this on.

Oh WOW. How did you get the corners to come out so perfectly? Your work is amazing! Thanks for that info. And oh, only one row didn't come out right? I'd be lucky to GET one right. |
You aren't fuzzy any more.
