A friend of a friend was down awhile ago and brought her sewing machine. I had never seen one like this. A sewing machine on one side and a serger on the other. Does anyone else have one of these machines? It's a Combi DX New Home.
Boy! I'd love to know more.

lynnie 09-13-2011 09:40 AM

That was my first thought too! I'm going to go see if I can find out more information on this machine!

crafty_linda_b 09-13-2011 09:42 AM

That looks like a really unique machine..I bet whoever invented it made a million bucks!! I am sure it is out of my price range tho....thanks for sharing and giving me something else to at to my "wish" list..crafty_linda_b

suebee 09-13-2011 09:44 AM

Thats really cool. I will be following this too, what a concept!

MTS 09-13-2011 09:48 AM

Very nifty.

How old a machine is it? 1980's?

cjomomma 09-13-2011 09:48 AM

My eyes are popping out!! I want it! :-)

RenaB 09-13-2011 09:49 AM

How cool is that, I never knew one existed.

misscarol 09-13-2011 09:51 AM

I think this machine came out in the 90's. Jan thought she bought it in 1994. I hope she'll sell me her's someday!
So far I can only find them in New Zealand or Austraila!

Let us know what you find out!

Lori S 09-13-2011 09:54 AM

How cool is that~!!!! I really want to play with one.

misscarol 09-13-2011 09:55 AM

I'm thinking Jan should leave it with me while she winters in Florida :)

jaciqltznok 09-13-2011 09:57 AM

now that is really neat....have not seen that one before! It must be an older machine because a general search for one turned up nothing but manuals you could have printed! Darn...thought this would be great for my sister that sews costumes.

Cool.

irishrose 09-13-2011 10:08 AM

Am I the only one who'd rather have the machines separate? Very cool, but not for me.

valsma 09-13-2011 10:20 AM

Cool, never heard of it.

bakermom 09-13-2011 10:36 AM

I think they were available in the mid to late 80s. My DH looked into getting one for me( I think it was a New Home). In the end he decided against because he felt if one part(machine) went bad, you would not be able to use the other either. that was also the feeling of the sewing store owner where he had asked about one. I don't know anyone that actually had one though.

misscarol 09-13-2011 10:37 AM

Oh I forgot! See the lever in the front of the sewing machine? That locks it to the table. When you want to use the serger, flip the lever and it swivels around!!! It is just too cool!!!! :)

Candace 09-13-2011 10:44 AM

I did some reading on the net and I think the serger part of this machine is only a 2 thread serger....so this would be very, very limiting if true. overcasting etc. needs really a 3 to 5 thread overcast.

QuiltingNinaSue 09-13-2011 10:47 AM

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing the pictures!!

No, you're not the only one. Interesting but not for me either.

Ginaky 09-13-2011 10:56 AM

I worked in a store that sold them in the late 80's, very early 90's. If I remember correctly, it only did a 2 thread overlock stitch, but I could be wrong there. The machine was on a swivel base that you could turn to whichever type machine you wanted to use. I don't think we ever sold one and they weren't out very long. We did have one in the store I played with a good bit, though.

We both found the same thing.. just manual copies... No Machines.. :)

Jammin' Jane 09-13-2011 11:00 AM

That is so awesome!

pocoellie 09-13-2011 11:03 AM

Those have been around for quite a while. I don't know how well they work though, so can't help you there, hopefully someone here will be able to.

fabric whisperer 09-13-2011 11:07 AM

could save room in my sewing room ~ I cannot live without my serger, I sew clothing and pet items and home dec type stuffs as well as quilting :D

SuzyQ 09-13-2011 11:10 AM

hmmm, interesting. I've never seen anything like that before.

You are correct, it is only a 2 thread overlock stitch. Do you have any idea how much they sold for?

pipp5 09-13-2011 11:44 AM

That's one of the coolest things I've ever seen! I so want one!

scowlkat 09-13-2011 11:45 AM

New Home is now Janome. Doubt they make it anymore unless is outside the U.S.

Some machines today do have the same capability and in fact was just discussed the other day. My Babylock Ellisimo has a sidecutter device which provides the same thing, a 2 stitch overlock. Not worth setting up if you have a serger, which I do.

No, not for me neither...I'd much prefer separate machines.

I do remember one being made by Janome, you could buy it here in Australai many years ago now
