I didn't like the one I did either. In the end, I put a border around each piece and then joined them together. It looked more appealing at that stage.

You may be able to do it. It just needs to stack up so you have 6 repeats. How far apart are the repeats in your fabric. I have made 5 OBW and have fabric for three more. I did one as an Octagon and I decided I like the hexagon better. You have options when putting the pieces together, while the octagon triangles do not since only two sides are equal.
I am sorry sewingsuz doesn' like the quilt, I love that each one is a surprise in the end.

sewingsuz---what is it you don't like about it? I'm thinking about making one this spring but have been intimidated so far. And my book says I need 5 yards of material but there is only 4 yards left of what I wanted to use. Hang in there, once it's done, hopefully you won't have to look at it any longer.

I'm working on one now....determined to finish it before I can start anything else.
Let me just say that sharing the steps here made the process very fun. That being said...in the time I sit at the machine and stare at my design wall at the FIVE HUNDRED SEVENTY SIX triangles...well, I get overwhelmed and have considered shoving it in a box, too. I really don't like the fabric, but I like the hexes, and as the rows are coming together, I like the quilt better.
I know I want to try it again. Later. With fabric I actually like. LOL.

Suzanne, You are not alone, the OBW is not for me. If I were making one I would do something to separate the blocks.

My goodness don't feel guilty about the price of the book. I felt the same way about the Blooming Nine Patch. That was the hardest simple pattern I've ever done.

Finally I took the blocks that I'd made, the blocks that I'd cut, and all the fabric needed to finish this large quilt to a retreat determined to finish it. I took it out and had it done in less than 10 minutes! One of the ladies across from me said oh that's so beautiful! I asked if she really liked it and when she said yes, I shoved it across the table, gave it to her and marked it off my list. Project done! So yes, I can feel your pain.

What a kind and wonderful thing you did! Wow.

I've heard pros and cons here in Aberdeen,WA about OBWs. I think I will sign up for a class at the LQS if the same teacher has it again as I have seen her quilts in process and liked her way of talking about how it is done. I think I would be content with a wall hangingfor a starter on a new technique to me.

I agree 100%. It isn't the quilt block for me.

I have made one OBW. I love the look of it but did not enjoy the sewing process of it at all. I can now say "been there, done that". But not twice!
