Inquiring minds want to know !
What are crumb quilts????
|
Thanks for asking, I'm not clear on that either!
|
little bitty pieces of fabric - usually abut 2" up in size. Use for miniature and or small piece blocks.
|
crumbs are little scraps-people (often) use a foundation and stitch their little scraps to the foundation-put them all together and they have a 'crumb quilt'
|
Anyone have a picture of one, love to see one.

that depends on who you ask. At my one group we sew for the children's hospice. We take the smaller pieces people donate and then take a strip of fabric, any size strip we have and start sewing the small pieces to it. THen those are cut apart and sewn to another strip. and so it goes until we have blocks about 6-8" usually. TONS of mindless sewing which is good they way those get to yacking..hehehe

I've been happily playing in my scraps and started out to make a crumb quilt, inspired by Bonnie Hunter (http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2005/...bs-crumbs.html ) and by a "Crumb Along with Me" project on the blog Jo's Country Junction ( http://www.joscountryjunction.com/?page_id=4906). Check both of those links to see great examples of crumb quilts. On Jo's blog she has links to postings by others who are doing her crumb-along. http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...e-t180521.html. Got some great suggestions. Since then, I've made about 15 more blocks, trying to work in more blue and other colors to help balance out all the red. But still, lots of red, white and blue blocks!I just couldn't get into sewing pieces together randomly so I started making four-patches or wonky flying geese, log cabins, etc. It's been a lot of fun and I made all kinds of silly things as well as some traditional blocks. Yesterday I posted a request for help picking colors for sashings: I tend to cut up my scraps periodically into 2.5 inch strips or squares for a couple of scrappy projects I have in mind. The little bits left over...smaller than 2.5 inches or odd shaped, I throw in the crumb drawer. I also have strings that are narrow and long in another drawer. I've used a bunch of crumbs and strings and did dip into my 2.5 inch strips and a little bit of stash for variety. Lots of fun but you have to let go of all the "rules" and just play! |

I made one I call a confetti quilt, but the idea is similar, although all my pieces are spread out...

Here's a picture of a crumb quilt I made last year. I added flower embroideries in the plain blocks. I keep anything bigger than 1.5" x 1.5"...simply sew two little pieces together and keep adding pieces until you get something bigger than the block you want (my blocks were 6.5" unfinished)...then take your ruler and trim down to the block size you want. :)
