I just got an invoice from ITunes showing a $99.99 charge that my 6 year old great granddaughter made by downloading a barbie type app in my IPad. I'm so mad, not at her because she did not know what she was doing but at the vendor for not having their apps more secure. This should not be allowed to happen.

LisaGibbs 07-08-2011 10:55 AM

I would call and tell them it was not an authorized purchase and fight for a refund. I would be very upset. This has happened on my cell phone over some spammed things and I fought it and won.

watterstide 07-08-2011 10:55 AM

yikees! you should be able to cancel it by law.?

Airwick156 07-08-2011 10:58 AM

OH NO!!!! I would be mad too. Those app places should be held responsible for that. They know they are in the wrong by not making it more secure. There thinking is....that the kids will download tons of apps to make money. Shame on those companies. Shame Shame Shame. Hope they don't charge you for it after you call them and explain what happened.

KimmieH 07-08-2011 11:03 AM

ditto -- and don't delay.

Missi 07-08-2011 11:12 AM

On itunes you can choose to have the software remember your password or enter it manually whenever you download anything. For this exact reason I don't save my password.

Fight it you might be able to get some back. Isn't it amazing how tech savy these youngsters are these days. 6 years old and new how to get an app downloaded on an iPad.

BigDog 07-08-2011 11:15 AM

I may be in the minority here, but the child is not IPad's responsibility. They have no way of knowing who's pushing the buttons on the other end. It sure seems like the child knew exactly what she was doing.

BarbaraA 07-08-2011 11:24 AM

In the App Store you have to enter a password to purchase.

BarbaraA 07-08-2011 11:26 AM

I don't see any apps for 99.99. You should call, maybe something else is going on.

ScubaK 07-08-2011 11:26 AM

I would ask them to refund the charges. Apple is fantastic with customer service. You can also use a parental control and do not store your passwords.
Also, IPad has a pass key lock to even use the IPad. Which I use.

Children that age know how to get things done these days. But they still have no real understanding of the cost yet. Good luck with getting it removed and time for a chat with the grandchild about not downloading anything without asking for permission first.

Zhillslady 07-08-2011 11:49 AM

Careful there are a lot of these. One is a free smurf game but the kids need a type of berry used like money. WHen you download the berries it charges to your Iphone cell bill

ptquilts 07-08-2011 11:52 AM

Still young enough that she needs to be supervised while using it. If she needs some alone time, how about a deck of cards and teach her how to play solitaire?

Nanamoms 07-08-2011 01:02 PM

You can put parental controls on most everything. I know that it has happened on games and songs on my just regular old phone and I'm the only one that uses it. I am continually getting some kind of miscellaneous monthly charge. And "customer service" just can't quite figure out how it got on there. If I don't catch it on the first or second charge, they won't refund all the charges; just a couple of them. HUH? But I never authorized it!! I think all this is just another way to make money for the apps creators.

PS: My 1 year old grandson knows how to manipulate his parents i-phones!! He loved computers and phones. :)

raedar63 07-08-2011 01:59 PM

I think apple will work with you, although I had a cell phone bill ran up to 5 grand once and they would not budge :(

rivka 07-08-2011 02:15 PM

Uh-oh! $99? What in the world did the app do to cost that much??

It might be one of the games that let's you buy things to progress in the game...

I don't see how she got it without your password- apparently she has your password?

Actually you are responsible to have your account secure so no one can d/l on your Ipad. The child would have needed your security password to d/l anything.

I have to put it in everytime I buy something and d/l it to my Ipad.

YES there is. The child could not d/l it to Ipad without the account owners password and username.

I agree totally! No one can d/l on your Ipad without your username and password.

If the account is set up to remember the password it is the account owners fault as to what happens on it.

A 6 year old knows what they are doing with these tech toys. I have a now 7 and 9 year old who know. One of them tried to d/l app one day and she asked what my password was. I wouldn't give it to her. She wanted an app that was only 5.95 and would have d/l it if I had my account remember my password.

It is not ITunes or apps stores responsibility for our accounts. We are!

Correct! My GD's started pre-school with computers in them and from kindergarden on they do most of classwork on computers. They are now going into 2nd and 4th grades and have/are growing up in school using computers, iPads, and other electronics.

About 5 years ago a young friend refused to get her 5 year old daughter a cell phone, but the child's grandparents gave her one without my friend's knowledge or agreement. So one day she took daughter to visit Grandparents and as she was picking her up, friend heard inlaws inside the house yelling at each other.
In the car she asked DD what was going on.

'Mommy, how much is three thousand? Grandpa doesn't want me to talk to anybody with a ONE in front of their numbers"
DD asked innocently.

Seems she had discovered long distance dialing and was having fun talking with strangers all over the nation, and that was one gabby little girl!! Loved talking. It's amazing how fast they are learning all this technical stuff!! Much faster than most of us older folks.

You can't call them, the only way to communicate is thru EMail, so I'm waiting for a response

Yes, there is, but I downloaded a free app for her with my password, and once she was playing that, they must have offered to upgrade it from there without needing a password.

susie-susie-susie 07-08-2011 04:07 PM

Kids are so smart these days. When you need some help with your computer, just ask the kid down the street. If they are school age they can usually do more than you can on the computer.

What does that app do for $99.99?

I just investigated a little more and I realized she bought coins to spend in the shop (play money that cost me $100) AGH !! I guess when you are in the app even tho it's free, you don't need a password to purchase coins.

snipforfun 07-08-2011 07:49 PM

Same thing happened to me except it was more $. When kids download free apps they are always being asked to make upgrades and of course they say OK. You need to go into settings and set restrictions. I called ITunes and they reluctantly refunded $. I set my restrictions to include pretty much everything. The important one is In App purchases. Kids can upgrade without password if this restriction is not set to off.

BellaBoo 07-08-2011 07:50 PM

The Barbie app has features you have to say yes to install as you play. A lot of games have this so you have to be aware before you download the app. It's posted in all the reviews of the apps that have this. All the child has to do is touch the yes button for the charge. Most don't realize it's a charge but know if they touch yes they get new features on the app. ITunes refunded one app for me that I bought but it wouldn't work on my Itouch even though it said it would not work, I didn't read all the requirements. ITunes said one refund this time only.

snipforfun 07-08-2011 07:56 PM

Gotta set restrictions for "In App purchases" which can be made without a password.

owlvamp 07-08-2011 08:02 PM

Use a parental control and do not store your passwords.
Hope for the best outcome.

Mommomjoann 07-09-2011 03:16 AM

I also have an iPad, love it, our grandchildren are here for the summer. They ask for "games" to be put on, some there is a fee, but most all of them are free. I have to put in my password for them to get it thru iTunes, or it won't go thru. Somehow you better change your password, I'm afraid she knows it!!!

Arleners 07-09-2011 03:35 AM

And the company knew just what they were doing charging $90.00 for a Barbie App. Sounds like they are just waiting to have this happen.

Yes. My 20 year old cannot access without me logging in.

willowwind 07-09-2011 04:24 AM

my 8 year old granddaughter bought 2 songs from ITunes by watching her mom type in the password, memorizing it,& using it to buy the songs. They cost far less than $99.99. I think I'd change the password, check with the ITunes people to see what they can do about the situation.

cookiepress 07-09-2011 04:29 AM

I download from Itunes all the time and am always asked for my password, even for free apps. I would call them and ask. I have found that Apple has excellent customer service.

Sande 07-09-2011 04:40 AM

This isn't an Apple problem so no need to call Apple. It's an iTunes problem. iTunes is supported separately from Apple and you need to go through iTunes.

Go to the iTunes support page at apple.com/support/itunes for help with this.

Also, make sure you change your iPad settings to not remember your password in iTunes. If your iPad is stolen, anyone can access your account if you leave your password unprotected.

If you need help figuring out how to change your iTunes settings go to the above-mentioned support page.

jitkaau 07-09-2011 04:56 AM

Is there a cooling off period after purchase?I'd explain the situation and ask for their understanding.

Sande 07-09-2011 05:00 AM

There's no cooling off period. The quicker you respond the better results you'll get. You want to bring this problem to iTunes attention immediately. If you wait awhile they'll be less understanding. You don't want them to think you used the App for awhile before complaining about the problem.
